OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
December E-mini S&Ps (ESZ13 +0.19%) this morning are up +0.10% and European stocks are down -0.38%. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan -0.88%, Hong Kong +0.19%, China +0.47%, Taiwan -0.73%, Australia -0.26%, Singapore -0.29%, South Korea +0.64%, India +0.15%. Supporting stock prices today is strength in Chinese manufacturing activity which expanded last month at the fastest pace in 15-months. European stocks were undercut by a -3.1% decline in Royal Bank of Scotland after Britain's biggest publicly owned bank said it will write down as much as 4.5 billion pounds ($7.2 billion) in Q4, which will result in a "substantial" full-year loss. Also, Renault SA, France's second-biggest carmaker, dropped 3.5% after its partner Nissan Motor cut its full-year profit forecast by 15% due to weak sales in Europe and Asia. Japanese stocks were dragged lower by an 11% slump in Sony after the company lowered its full-year profit forecast by 40% on weak television and digital camera demand. Chinese stocks received a boost from a -0.41 point decline in China's 7-day repurchase rate to a 1-week low of 4.636% after the PBOC added a net 29.1 billion yuan ($4.8 billion) via money-market operations in the last 4 days. Japan Oct vehicle sales climbed +17.3% y/y, the most in 15-months.

Today’s Oct ISM manufacturing index is expected to show a -1.2 point decline to 55.0, more than reversing the +0.5 point increase to 56.2 seen in September. Today’s Oct total vehicle sales report is expected to improve to 15.40 million units from 15.21 million units in September. There are 5 of the S&P 500 companies that report earnings today: NextEra (consensus $1.39), Chevron (2.70), Washington Post, Berkshire Hathaway (2402.90), and Life Technologies (0.96). WellCare (WCG +0.68%) reported Q3 adjusted EPS of $1.56, better than consensus of $1.52, but then lowered guidance on fiscal 2013 EPS to $4.70-$4.80 from $4.70-$4.90, below consensus of $4.91.
Citigroup reiterated its 'Buy' raing on Mastercard (MA -1.18%) and raised its price target oon the stock to $835 from $710.

Lorillard Inc - Chart of the Day

Lorillard Inc (LO) is the Chart of the Day.  The tobacco manufacturer and marketer has a Trend Spotter buy signal, a Weighted Alpha of 39.13+ , paid a 4.34% dividend and gained 34.54% in the past year.

The Chart of the Day is Lorillard Inc (LO).  I found the stock near the top of the New High List when I sorted it for frequency.  Not only did the stock gain 34.54% last year but it also paid a 4.34% dividend. Since the Trend Spotter issued a buy signal on 9/6 the stock is up 16.99%.

It is the third largest manufacturer of cigarettes in the United States. LO is the oldest continuously operating tobacco company in the U.S. Newport, theirs flagship brand, is a menthol-flavored premium cigarette brand and the top selling menthol and second largest selling cigarette in the U.S. The product line has five additional brand families marketed under the Kent, True, Maverick, Old Gold and Max brand names. These six brands include 44 different product offerings which vary in price, taste, flavor, length and packaging.

The Eurozone Sep unemployment rate was unch from Aug at a record high 12.2%, higher than expectations of 12.0%.
German Sep retail sales unexpectedly fell for a second month when they dropped -0.4% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.4% m/m, while on an annual basis retail sales rose +0.2% y/y, also weaker than expectations of +1.1% y/y.
The German Nov GfK consumer confidence unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 7.0, weaker than expectations of +0.1 to 7.2.

Today’s weekly initial unemployment claims report is expected to show a -12,000 decline to 338,000, adding to last week’s decline of -12,000 to 350,000. Meanwhile, continuing claims are expected to fall by -4,000 to 2.870 million, adding to last week’s decline of -8,000 to 2.874 million. Today’s Oct Chicago PMI report is expected to show a -0.7 point decline to 55.0, giving back some of the +2.7 point increase to 55.7 seen in September. There are 34 of the S&P 500 companies that report earnings today with notable reports including Marathon Petroleum, ConocoPhillips, Avon, Exxon, MasterCard, Time Warner, Discovery Communications, Newmont Mining, First Solar, Public Storage. Treehouse Foods - Chart of the Day

Treehouse Foods (THS) is the Chart of the Day. The food manufacturing and servicing stock has a Trend Spotter buy, a Weighted Alpha of 44.20+ and gained 38.62% in the last year.


Today's Chart of the Day is Treehouse Foods (THS).   I found the stock by sorting the New High List for frequency making sure the stocks had positive gains for the last week and month then panned through the charts.  The stock broke out back on 10/11 and since then is up 7.32%.

It is a food manufacturer servicing primarily the retail grocery and food service channels. Its products include pickles and related products; non-dairy powdered coffee creamer; and other food products including aseptic sauces, refrigerated salad dressings, and liquid non-dairy creamer.

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
December E-mini S&Ps (ESZ13 +0.24%) this morning are up +0.27% at a record high and European stocks are up +0.52%. Asian stocks closed higher: Japan +1.23%, Hong Kong +2.00%, China +1.49%, Taiwan +0.52%, Australia +0.28%, Singapore +0.67%, South Korea +0.43%, India +0.50%. Stocks are higher worldwide on speculation the Fed will continue its stimulus measures at the conclusion of the 2-day FOMC meeting later today. Expectations are for no change in the Fed's $85 billion monthly purchases of Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities. European stocks received a boost after Eurozone Oct economic confidence rose more-than-expected to a 2-year high. Chinese stocks closed higher despite an increase in China's 7-day repurchase rate, which rose by +38 bp to a 3-3/4 month high of 5.42%. Commodity prices are mostly higher. Dec crude oil (CLZ13 -1.01%) is down -0.69% after weekly API inventories, released late yesterday afternoon, showed crude stockpiles climbed last week by +5.9 million barrels. Dec gasoline (RBZ13 +0.29%) is up +0.48%. Dec gold (GCZ13 +0.37%) is up +0.33% and Dec copper (HGZ13 +1.02%) is up +1.10%. Agricultural and livestock prices are mostly higher. The Eurozone Oct business climate indicator rose +0.18 to -0.01, more than expectations of +0.01 to -0.19, and the highest in 2-years, and the Oct economic confidence rose +0.9 to 97.8, better than expectations of +0.3 to 97.2 and also the highest in 2-years.
German Oct unemployment rose 2,000, more than expectations for no change, while the Oct unemployment rate remained unch at 6.9%, right on expectations.
The UK Oct Lloyds business barometer rose +6 from Sep to 63, the highest since the data series began in 2002.
Japan Sep industrial production rose +1.5% m/m and +5.4% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.8% m/m and +5.5% y/y.
Japan Sep vehicle production climbed +13.0% y/y, the first increase in 13 months.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes today and the market is not expecting the FOMC to announce QE3 tapering. Today’s Oct ADP employment report is expected to show a weak increase of +150,000, slipping from September’s report of +166,000. Today’s Sep CPI report is expected to ease to +1.2% y/y from +1.5% in August. Meanwhile, the Sep core CPI is expected to be unchanged from August at +1.8% y/y. The Treasury today will sell $29 billion of 7-year T-notes, concluding this week’s $97 billion T-note auction package. There are 35 of the S&P 500 companies that report earnings today with notable reports including PG&E, BorgWarner, Comcast, Garmin, Hess, ADP, The Southern Company, GM, Phillips 66, Kraft, Expedia, Allstate, Marriott, Visa, Starbucks, Williams Companies, MetLife.
