The 5 Worst Small Caps

Today I wanted to find the 5 worst Small Cap stocks, so I used Barchart to sort the S&P 600 Small Cap Index stocks to find the ones with the worst technical sell signals and then used the Flipchart feature to review the charts.

March E-mini S&Ps (ESH15 +0.16%) this morning are up +0.09% ahead of the U.S. Jan payrolls report and European stocks are down -0.53% after German Dec industrial output rose less than expected. Russia's Micex Stock Index soared nearly 3% to a 3-3/4 year high as the recent rebound in crude prices has boosted Russian energy producers. German Chancellor Merkel and French President Hollande are set to meet Russian President Putin today in Moscow to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan +0.82%, Hong Kong -0.35%, China -1.62%, Taiwan -0.59%, Australia +0.16%, Singapore +0.73%, South Korea +0.15%, India -0.46%. China's Shanghai Stock Index fell to a 6-week low after data this week fueled concern of a slowdown in China's economy. Chinese stocks continue to fall despite the action by the PBOC on Wednesday to cut the reserve ratio of banks. Commodity prices are mostly higher. Mar crude oil (CLH15 +2.73%) is up +3.45% and Mar gasoline (RBH15 +2.26%) is up +2.86%. Apr gold (GCJ15 +0.07%) is up +0.13%. Mar copper (HGH15 -0.73%) is down -0.52% after German industrial production rose less than expected and after weekly Shanghai copper inventories rose +2,354 MT to a 9-3/4 month high of 139,396 MT. Agriculture prices are higher. The dollar index (DXY00 +0.06%) is up +0.14%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.28%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.19%. Mar T-note prices (ZNH15 +0.02%) are down -1 tick.
German Dec industrial production rose +0.1% m/m, less than expectations of +0.4% m/m. On an annual basis, Dec industrial production fell -0.7% y/y, more than expectations of -0.3% y/y and the biggest year-over-year decline in 4 months.
The Japan Dec leading index CI rose +1.3 to 105.2, less than expectations of +1.5 to 105.4. The Dec coincident index climbed +1.5 to 110.7, better than expectations of +1.3 to 110.5 and the highest in 7 months.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
Today’s Jan payroll report is expected to show an increase of +230,000 (private payrolls expected +225,000). Today’s Jan unemployment rate is expected to be unchanged from December’s 6-1/2 year low of 5.6%. Today’s Dec consumer credit report is expected to show another strong increase of +$15.0 billion, up from Nov’s +$14.08 billion but mildly below the year-to-date monthly average of +$18.2 billion.
There are 16 of the S&P 500 companies that report earnings today: AON PLC (consensus $1.86), Moody's (0.95), Marsh & McLennan Cos. (0.66), Harris Corp. (1.18), FLIR Systems (0.48), Dominion Resources (0.83), Sigma-Aldrich (1.09). There are no equity conferences today.

Bloomberg reported that RadioShack (RSH unch) has filed for bankruptcy protection.
McKesson (MCK +2.38%) rose 1% in after-hours trading after it reported Q3 adjusted EPS of $2.89, well above consensus of $2.61.
Standard Pacific (SPF -1.63%) reported Q4 EPS of 16 cents, above consensus of 15 cents.

Bullish factors included (1) the +11,000 increase in U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims, less than expectations of +25,000 to 290,000, (2) increased M&A activity after Pfizer agreed to buy Hospira for $17 billion, and (3) strength in energy producers after crude oil rallied.

TriNet (TNET) is the Barchart Chart of the Day.  The outsourcing company has a Trend Spotter buy signal, a Weighted Alpha of 71.70+ and gained 84.50% last year.

March E-mini S&Ps (ESH15 +0.69%) this morning are up +0.44% on favorable stock earnings results, while European stocks are down -0.86%, led by a plunge in Greek bank stocks, after the ECB late yesterday restricted direct access to funding lines for Greek lenders. The ECB said it will no longer accept junk-rated collateral from Greece, citing doubt over the new government's commitment to previous reform pledges. Greek government bonds sank and Greece's ASE Stock Index tumbled over 5% as the ECB's decision will raise financing costs for Greek banks and adds pressure to the newly elected government to moderate its policies or risk sterner measures that may jeopardize its membership within the Eurozone. As expected, the BOE today kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 0.50% and maintained its asset purchase target at 375 billion pounds. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan -0.98%, Hong Kong +0.35%, China -1.02%, Taiwan -0.02%, Australia +0.58%, Singapore -0.32%, South Korea -0.72%, India -0.11%. Commodity prices are mixed. Mar crude oil (CLH15 +1.53%) is up +0.39% and Mar gasoline (RBH15 +1.13%) is up +0.71%. Apr gold (GCJ15 -0.20%) is down -0.31%. Mar copper (HGH15 -2.03%) is down -1.95%. The European Commission raised its Eurozone 2015 GDP estimate to 1.3% from a +1.1% projection in Nov, and lowered its 2015 CPI forecast to -0.1% from a Nov estimate of +0.8%, marking the first annual decline in consumer prices since the introduction of the euro in 1999.
German Dec factory orders jumped +4.2% m/m and +3.4% y/y, much better than expectations of +1.5% m/m and +0.7% y/y and the biggest increase in 5 months.
Boston Fed President Rosengren, speaking at an event in Germany, said "There is insufficient evidence that U.S. inflation is clearly trending toward the 2% goal" and that "a policy of patience in the U.S. continues to be appropriate."
UK Jan Halifax house prices rose +2.0% m/m, better than expectations of unch m/m and the biggest increase in 8 months.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
Today’s initial claims report is expected to show a +25,000 increase to 290,000 and the continuing claims report is expected to show an increase of +15,000 to 2.400 million. Today’s Dec U.S. trade deficit is expected to narrow mildly to -$38.0 billion from -$39.0 billion in November. Today’s Q4 non-farm productivity report is expected to show an increase of +0.2%, down from +2.3% in Q3. Q4 unit labor costs are expected to rise to +1.2% from -1.0% in Q3.

Aaon - Barchart's Chart of the Day

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
March E-mini S&Ps (ESH15 -0.36%) this morning are down -0.16% and European stocks are down -0.36% as a drop in crude oil undercuts energy producers and leads the overall market lower. Equity losses were limited after the PBOC cut banks' reserve ratio by 50 bp to 19.50%. European stocks also found support from stronger-than-expected Eurozone Dec retail sales and from an upward revision to the Eurozone Jan composite PMI to a 6-month high. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan +1.98%, Hong Kong +0.51%, China -1.04%, Taiwan +0.69%, Australia +1.23%, Singapore +0.28%, South Korea +0.49%, India -0.40%. Chinese stocks closed lower after a gauge of services activity last month slowed to the weakest pace in 6 months, although Chinese stocks have yet to react to the reserve ratio cut by the PBOC, which was done after Chinese equity markets had closed. Commodity prices are mixed. Mar crude oil (CLH15 -3.02%) is down -2.96% and Mar gasoline (RBH15 -2.29%) is down -2.45%. Apr gold (GCJ15 +0.60%) is up +0.51%. Mar copper (HGH15 +0.35%) is up +0.41% to a 2-week high after China lowered banks' reserve ratios, which may spur economic growth. Agriculture prices are mixed. The dollar index (DXY00 +0.09%) is up +0.19%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.24%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.09%. Mar T-note prices (ZNH15 unch) are unchanged.
In an attempt to add liquidity to the economy, the Peoples Bank of China (PBOC) lowered the reserve ratio that banks must set aside as reserves by 50 bp to 19.50%, effective Feb 5.
Eurozone Dec retail sales rose +0.3% m/m and +2.8% y/y, better than expectations of unch m/m and +2.0% y/y with the +2.8% y/y gain the largest annual increase in 7-3/4 years.
The Eurozone Jan Markit composite PMI was revised upward to 52.6 from the originally reported 52.2, the fastest pace of expansion in 6 months.
The German Jan Markit services PMI was revised upward to 54.0 from the originally reported 52.7.
The UK Jan Lloyds business barometer rose 4 to 49, the best level in 4 months.
The UK Jan Markit/CIPS services PMI rose +1.4 to 57.2, better than expectations of +0.5 to 56.3.
The China Jan HSBC services PMI fell -1.6 to 51.8, the slowest pace of expansion in 6 months.
Japan Dec real cash earnings fell -1.4% y/y, the eighteenth consecutive month that earnings have contracted.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
Today’s Jan ADP employment report is expected to show a gain of +220,000, exceeding the +200,000 mark for the fifth consecutive month. Today’s Jan ISM non-manufacturing index is expected to show a -0.1 point decline to 56.4, adding to the -2.3 point decline to 56.5 seen in December.

Supportive factors included (1) a rally in energy producers after crude oil climbed to a 2-week high, (2) increased M&A activity after the WSJ reported that Office Depot is an advanced merger talks with Staples, and (3) reduced concern that Greece will default on its debt after the Greek government backed off on a plan to write down its debt.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH15 unch) this morning are unch. Mar 10-year T-note futures prices on Tuesday closed lower. Closes: TYH5 -27.50, FVH5 -15.50. Bearish factors included (1) reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes after Greece's government backed down from its call for a debt write down, and (2) increased inflation expectations as a jump in crude to a 2-week high boosted the U.S. 10-year breakeven inflation rate to a 4-week high.
