Performance of Van Meerten New High Portfolio

Re: Hi Van....what has been your success using Barchart to find favorable stocks. I presume you have been buying some of the recommendations and wonder just how good the TA charts buy recs have been. I'm not sure that I want to own more stocks at this phase in the market. This for your posts. George -- slowbutsure

If you're interested in using Barchart and TA I use many of these recommendations in my Marketocracy New High portfolio. Last year I beat out all but 38 Marketocracy players out of about 100,000. Through the 5 year period ending 8/1/2012, I was #77. I also beat out all but 13 of the publicly traded mutual funds MorningStar follows If your interested here are the links to the sites that documented my returns

By the way today through August 1,2012 my Annual Rate of Return was 7.99% which included a 2% charge for fees. That compares to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) who had a 2.69% return after fees

The dollar index this morning is up +0.10% at a 1-1/2 week high with EUR/USD down -0.07% and USD/JPY up +0.33% at a 1-month high. • U.K. July retail sales with auto fuel unexpectedly rose +0.3% m/m and +2.8% y/y, better than expectations of -0.1% m/m and +1.4% y/y.
  • Euro-Zone July CPI fell -0.5% m/m and rose +2.4% y/y, right on expectations.
  • Dallas Fed President Fisher said late Wednesday that he doesn't see a "high likelihood" of a recession next year and that he doesn't believe "any amount of monetary stimulus is going to deal with this uncertainty and inability of companies to budget, to plan" due to the lack of clarity in fiscal policy.
  • China July foreign direct investment fell -8.7% y/y to $7.58 billion, its lowest level in 2 years, which fuels concern that a slowdown in confidence in China's growth prospects may restrain any economic rebound.
  • The South Korean July unemployment rate unexpectedly dipped -0.1 to 3.1%, better than expectations of a +0.1 increase to 3.3% and its lowest level in 7 months.
    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are up +2.00 points (+0.14%) and the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.08%. The stock market on Wednesday fluctuated between gains and losses and finally settled mixed as strength in U.S. July industrial production and the Aug NAHB housing market index offset weakness in the Aug Empire manufacturing index and an increase in Q2 China non-performing loans: S&P 500 +0.11%, Dow Jones -0.06%, Nasdaq 100 +0.28%. Tame inflation was another positive for stocks as the smaller-than-expected +1.4% y/y increase in July CPI was its smallest annual gain in 20 months.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are down -3 ticks at a fresh 3-month low on reduced expectations of additional Fed stimulus. T-note prices on Wednesday fell for the third straight session as stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data on industrial production and housing signaled improvement in the economy that dampened speculation the Fed will need to provide additional monetary stimulus: TYU2 -18.0, FVU2 -7.2. The 10-year T-note yield jumped to a 3-month high of 1.811%.
    • The dollar index this morning is up +0.10%. EUR/USD is down -0.07% and USD/JPY is up +0.33% at a 1-month high. The dollar index on Wednesday closed higher as strong U.S. economic data on industrial production and housing dampened speculation the Fed will need to increase dollar negative stimulus measures to support the economy: Dollar index +0.162 (+0.20%), EUR/USD -0.08%, USD/JPY +0.54%. USD/JPY posted a 4-week high as an increase in the U.S. 10-year T-note yield to a 3-month high boosted the dollar's interest rate differentials versus the yen.
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are down 6 cents a barrel (-0.06%) and Sep gasoline is -0.0073 of a cent per gallon (-0.24%). Crude oil and gasoline prices on Wednesday closed higher after DOE weekly crude oil supplies fell a more than expected -3.70 million barrels a day to a 4-month low of 366.2 million barrels, while U.S. petroleum consumption for the week ended Aug 10 jumped 5.7% to a 9-month high of 20.03 million barrels a day: CLU2 +0.90 (+0.96%), RBU2 +0.0826 (+2.75%).

Barchart's Morning Call 8/15

Barchart Morning Call
Overnight Developments
  • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are down -0.20% and the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.30% on speculation the U.S. economy is growing enough for the Fed to avoid further stimulus measures. Commodity prices are mostly lower with Sep crude down -0.28% and Sep copper down -0.43%, while the grain markets are higher with Dec corn up +0.57% and Nov soybeans up +1.02%%. The dollar index this morning is stronger with EUR/USD down -0.28% and USD/JPY up +0.25% at a 4-week high. Sep T-notes extended Tuesday's declines as they weakened further by another -4 ticks to a 2-month low on reduced expectations for QE3.
  • Asian stocks today closed lower led by a slide in steelmakers and mining companies after a director at Vale SA, the world's biggest ore producer, said China's "golden years" of economic expansion are over: Japan -0.05%, Hong Kong -1.18%, China -1.08%, Taiwan -0.15%, Australia -0.26%, Singapore -0.93%, South Korea and India closed for holiday.
  • U.K. July jobless claims unexpectedly fell -5,900, better than expectations of a +6,000 increase as the Olympic Games created jobs. The July ILO unemployment rate also unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 8.0%, the lowest in a year.
  • The minutes of the Aug 1-2 BOE policy meeting showed policy makers voted unanimously, 9-0, to keep their bond-purchase target unchanged and that they will assess the need for "other measures" in light of the impact of their new credit-boosting program.
  • European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Rehn said Spain's government is considering a request for a sovereign bailout and that "the Spanish government has an open mind on the issue, but no decision has yet been made."
  • The director of investor relations for Vale SA, the world's biggest ore producer, said China's "golden years are gone and we are not going to see the spectacular growth rates of 10% to 12% per year."
    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are down -2.75 points (-0.20%) and the Euro Stoxx 50 is off by -0.30% on reduced expectations for additional Fed stimulus measures. The stock market on Tuesday rallied to 3-1/4 month highs on better-than-expected U.S. July retail sales and stronger-than-expected German Q2 GDP but stocks erased their gains and closed mixed: S&P 500 -0.01%, Dow Jones +0.02%, Nasdaq 100 -0.03%. Other bullish factors included the minutes of last month's BOJ policy meeting which showed policy makers weren't ruling out any options to boost growth along with a fall in Greek, Spanish and Italian bond yields after Greece sold more than its maximum target of 3-month debt at auction. Stocks came off of their best levels in the afternoon after policy planning documents obtained by Bloomberg News showed the U.K. is pressing for the ECB to share power with national regulators as it takes over Euro-Zone bank supervision, which may compromise the ECB's reputation and perceived independence.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are down -4 ticks at a 2-month low. T-note prices on Tuesday closed lower as 10-year T-notes fell to a 1-1/2 month low after stronger-than-expected U.S. July retail sales bolstered stocks and reduced the safe-haven demand for Treasuries: TYU2 -15.5, FVU2 -6.5. Another factor that reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes was Greece's action to sell more than its maximum target of 3-month bills at auction, which eased European debt concerns.
    • The dollar index this morning is higher. EUR/USD is down -0.28% and USD/JPY is up +0.25% at a 4-week high. The dollar index on Tuesday closed higher as strong July U.S. retail sales reduced speculation the Fed will need to increase stimulus measures while the yen slid to a 3-1/2 week low against the dollar after minutes of the BOJ's July meeting signaled policy makers are considering ways to expand stimulus: Dollar index +0.048 (+0.06%), EUR/USD -0.02%, USD/JPY +0.01%. Dollar gains were limited on reduced safe-haven demand after stocks rallied to 3-1/4 month highs.
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are down 26 cents a barrel (-0.28%) and Sep gasoline is up +0.0087 of a cent per gallon (+0.29%). Crude oil and gasoline prices on Tuesday settled higher as stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales and Q2 German GDP data bolstered the outlook for economic growth and energy demand: CLU2 +0.48 (+0.52%), RBU2 +0.0107 (+0.36%). Wednesday's weekly DOE inventory report is expected to show crude stockpiles fell -1.75 million bbl, gasoline supplies declined -2.0 million bbl, distillate inventories dropped -400,000 bbl and the refinery utilization rate slid -0.3 to 92.3% of capacity.

    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are up +2.50 points (+0.18%) at a fresh 4-1/4 month high and the Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.53%. The stock market on Monday traded mostly lower and settled mixed on concerns over the global economy after Japan's Q2 GDP was weaker than expected: S&P 500 -0.13%, Dow Jones -0.29%, Nasdaq 100 +0.21%. Stock losses were limited on speculation global central banks will increase their stimulus measures to support economic growth.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are down -1.5 ticks. T-note prices on Monday traded slightly lower as a recovery in stocks limited the safe-haven demand for Treasuries: TYU2 -3.5, FVU2 -0.5. Another factor that reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes was Italy's action to sell all the debt it planned at an auction of Treasury bills, which eased European debt concerns.
    • The dollar index this morning is down -0.10%. EUR/USD is up +0.14% and USD/JPY is +0.26%. The yen weakened overnight after minutes of the BOJ's July meeting signaled policy makers are considering ways to expand stimulus. The dollar index on Monday settled lower as the euro recovered its losses and settled little changed after Italy sold the maximum amount of debt offered for sale, which reduced European debt concerns : Dollar index -0.118 (-0.14%), EUR/USD unchanged, USD/JPY unchanged. Dollar losses were limited on an increase in safe-haven demand as stocks fell early along with comments from ECB Council member Coene who said European sovereign bond yields have been rising because financial markets don't trust Spanish and Italian authorities to take the measures necessary to repair their economies.
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are up 28 cents a barrel (+0.30%) and Sep gasoline is up 0.0069 of a cent a gallon (+0.23%). Crude oil and gasoline prices on Monday closed slightly lower as weaker-than-expected Japan Q2 GDP bolstered concern that global economic growth and energy demand may slow: CLU2 -0.14 (-0.15%), RBU2 -0.0132 (00.44%). Sep gasoline had posted a 3-1/2 month nearest-futures high before erasing its gains and closing lower on supply concerns due to diminished fuel production at Chevron's 240,000 bpd refinery in Richmond, California along with reduced output in the North Sea due to ongoing seasonal maintenance. Another supportive factor for energy prices was the report from the Haaretz daily that Israeli leaders are leaning toward a military strike on Iran over its nuclear program before U.S. elections in November.

    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are up +0.04% and the Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.36%% on expectations of further central bank stimulus. The stock market on Friday closed slightly higher on optimism the Fed will boost stimulus measures to stimulate growth. Stocks erased early losses tied to global economic concerns after Jun French industrial production and Chinese export growth both weakened more than expected: S&P 500 +0.22%, Dow Jones +0.32%, Nasdaq 100 +0.12%. Stocks weakened early after July China exports rose +1.0% y/y, weaker than expectations of +8.0% y/y and the slowest pace of growth in 6 months. Another negative for stocks was concern the ongoing European debt crisis is undercutting growth after French June industrial production fell -2.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of -1.8% y/y. The main bullish factor for stocks was optimism that global central banks will act to stimulate the economy.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are down -4.5 ticks. T-note prices on Friday closed higher on increased safe-haven demand after stocks fell early on concern global growth was slowing after China's July exports rose less than expected along with supply relief as U.S. bond dealers lifted their short hedges following the Treasury's $72 billion refunding operation: TYU2 +9, FVU2 +5.2.
    • The dollar index this morning is down -0.21%. EUR/USD is up +0.55% and USD/JPY is +0.04%. The dollar index on Friday closed slightly lower after Fed President Williams suggested it's time to move ahead with QE3: Dollar index -0.85 (-0.10%), EUR/USD -0.00176 (-0.14%), USD/JPY -0.289 (-0.37%). The dollar rallied early last Friday after global stocks fell on weak Chinese export data but dollar gains evaporated after San Francisco Fed President Williams said it was time to move ahead with QE3.
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are up 79 cents a barrel (+0.85%) and Sep gasoline is up +3.60 cents a gallon (+1.20%). Crude oil and gasoline prices on Friday closed mixed as a slowdown in China's export growth along with the action by the IEA to cut its 2012 and 2013 global demand forecasts bolstered energy demand concerns: CLU2 -0.49 (-0.52%), RBU2 +0.0031 (+0.10%). The IEA cut its 2012 world crude oil consumption estimate by 250,000 barrels a day to 89.6 million barrels a day and cut its 2013 global oil demand forecast to 90.5 million barrels a day, 400,000 barrels less than last month's estimate. Energy demand in China, the world's second-largest consumer of crude, also slowed after its customs data showed July China crude imports were 21.6 MMT, the weakest in 7 months. Gasoline prices were boosted by a continued shutdown of a Chevron refinery in California along with a fire at an Imperial Oil refinery in Ontario. Energy prices also found support from the action of the U.S. Climate Prediction Center to raise its seasonal Atlantic storm forecast for this year to 12 to 17 systems, up from a May forecast of 9 to 15 systems.
