The dollar index (DXY00 +0.30%) this morning is up +0.21%. EUR/USD is seeing continued weakness and is down -0.0046 (-0.41%) this morning on yesterday's news that the ECB will slightly expand QE in May-June to account for lower liquidity over the summer. USD/JPY is up +0.24 (+0.20%). June 10-year T-notes (ZNM15 +0.04%) are unchanged this morning. June bunds are up +0.26 points.

The Japan Q1 GDP report of +2.4% (q/q annualized) was stronger than market expectations of +1.6%, although Q4 was revised lower to +1.1% from +1.5%.
The Bank of England policy minutes were a bit hawkish as they said that slack in the UK economy will probably be eroded within a year, which signals that potential future inflation pressures may then require a rate hike. For now, the Monetary Policy Committee voted 9-0 to keep its base rate unchanged at 0.50%.
The ECB later today will likely raise the Greek Emergency Lending Assistance (ELA) facility from the current 80 billion euros, adding to last week's hike of 2.0 billion euros.

The S&P 500 on Tuesday closed little changed on offsetting factors. Stocks were supported by the sharp +20.2% increase in April U.S. housing starts to a 7-1/3 year high, although that also meant the Fed might tighten sooner rather than later. U.S. stocks also received a boost from a rally in European stocks on the ECB’s statement that it will boost the size of its QE program in May-June to offset lower liquidity during the summer. Stocks were undercut by a -4.4% slump in Wal-Mart on a disappointing earnings report and by weakness in energy producers after the sharp -3.74% sell-off in crude oil prices.

MARKET COMMENTS
June 10-year T-notes are unchanged this morning, awaiting today's FOMC meeting minutes. Tuesday's closes: TYM5 -11.00, FVM5 -8.50. Jun T-notes on Tuesday closed lower on the +20.2% surge in U.S. April housing starts and increased concern about a Fed rate hike. However, T-notes found support from the sharp sell-off in oil prices that undercut inflation expectations and from carry-over support from the +0.38 point rally in June Bund prices.
The dollar index this morning is up +0.21%. EUR/USD is seeing continued weakness and is down -0.0046 (-0.41%) this morning on yesterday's news that the ECB will slightly expand QE in May-June to account for lower liquidity over the summer. USD/JPY is up +0.24 (+0.20%). Tuesday's closes: Dollar Index +1.083 (+1.15%), EUR/USD -0.0165 (-1.46%), USD/JPY +0.70 (+0.58%). The dollar index on Tuesday closed sharply higher for the second straight day on the sharp +20.2% increase in U.S. April housing starts and on EUR weakness sparked by the news that the ECB is boosting the size of QE in May-June to offset reduced liquidity during the summer.
July WTI crude oil is up +0.56 (+0.97%) on some short-covering after yesterday's plunge. July gasoline is up +0.0243 (+1.23%). Tuesday's closes: CLN5 -2.25 (-3.74%), RBN5 -0.0376 (-1.85%). Jul crude oil and gasoline prices on Tuesday closed sharply lower on the sharp rally in the dollar index and on expectations for the U.S. and world oil supply glut to continue.

BARCHART MORNING CALL 5/19

BARCHART MORNING CALL

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
June E-mini S&Ps (ESM15 +0.24%) this morning are up +5.50 points (+0.26%) on carry-over optimism from European stocks. The Euro Stoxx 50 index this morning is sharply higher by +1.7% after an ECB official said that the ECB will increase its QE buying in May and June ahead of lower liquidity during the summer. Asian stocks today closed mostly higher with a sharp +3.13% increase in China's Shanghai Composite: Japan +0.68%, Hong Kong +0.37%, Taiwan +1.15%, Australia -0.77%, Singapore -0.16%, South Korea +0.36%, India -0.15%.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.81%) is up +0.67% as EUR/USD (^EURUSD) tumbled by -0.0106 (-0.94%) on the ECB's announcement that it will temporarily boost the size of QE during May and June. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is slightly higher by +0.07 points (+0.06%). GBP/USD is down -0.87% this morning on the decline in the UK CPI rate to -0.1% y/y, which will keep BOE policy easy. June 10-year T-notes (ZNM15 +0.20%) are up +6.5 ticks on support from higher June bund prices, which are up +0.67 points.
Commodity prices are down -0.64% this morning on the rally in the dollar index. June WTI crude oil (CLN15 -0.81%) is down -0.51 (-0.85%), June Brent crude oil is down -0.63 (-0.95%), and May gasoline (RBN15 -0.50%) is down -0.0172 (-0.85%). May natural gas (NGN15 +1.80%) is up +0.036 (+1.18%).

The ECB will increase its QE buying in May and June ahead of lower liquidity during the summer months, according to comments in a speech today by ECB Executive Board member Benoit Coeure. He said that "the slightly higher purchase volume that market analysts may observe in coming weeks is therefore unrelated to the recent episode of market volatility." The QE program involves the purchase of about 60 billion euros per month of securities and is due to last until Sep 2016 and total 1.1 trillion euros. Although Mr. Coeure said that the purchase adjustment is related to liquidity concerns, the outcome is having the ECB's desired effect today of pushing the euro lower and providing support for Eurozone bond prices.
Germany's May ZEW investor confidence index fell sharply by -11.4 points to 41.9 from 53.3 in April, which was substantially weaker than market expectations for a decline to 49. The decline in German investor confidence was driven by the weaker-than-expected German Q1 GDP report of +0.3% q/q, the recent jump in German bond yields, and worries about Greece.

The S&P 500 on Monday climbed to a fresh all-time high and closed higher on continued hopes that the Fed may not ease until early 2016 after Chicago Fed President Evans said that “my current view is that my economic outlook and my assessment of the balance of risks will evolve in such a way that I likely will not feel confident enough to begin to raise rates until early next year.” Stocks also saw support from increased M&A activity after Endo International Plc agreed to buy Par Pharmaceutical Holdings for $8.05 billion and after Ascena Retail Group purchased Ann Inc. for $2.2 billion. BARCHART MORNING CALL 5/18

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
June E-mini S&Ps (ESM15 -0.27%) this morning are down -0.13% as they consolidate modestly below Friday's new all-time high. European stocks are down -0.58% as no resolution is seen yet to the Greek debt crisis. The yield on the Greek 10-year bond climbed to a 2-week high of 11.40% on concern the ongoing impasse may prompt the ECB to increase the discount on the collateral Greek banks pledge in exchange for cash under its Emergency Liquidity Assistance program. That may fuel further outflow of bank deposits and force Greek Prime Minister Tsipras to choose between doing a deal with Greece's creditors or implement capital controls in an attempt to keep Greece's banks solvent. ECB Executive Board member Mersch said Saturday about Greece's debt crisis that "we are in an endgame" and that "this situation is not tenable." Stock losses were contained on increased M&A activity after Endo International Plc agreed to buy Par Pharmaceutical Holdings for $8.05 billion. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan +0.80%, Hong Kong -0.83%, China -0.58%, Taiwan +0.28%, Australia -1.33%, Singapore -0.10%, South Korea +0.24%, India +1.33%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Index climbed to a 2-week high on improved company earnings prospects and share buybacks from Japanese companies.
Commodity prices are mixed. Jun crude oil (CLM15 +1.29%) is up +0.90% and Jun gasoline (RBM15 unch) is down -0.31%. Metals prices are higher. Jun gold (GCM15 +0.06%) is up +0.29% at a 3-month high after Chicago Fed President Evans said the Fed should hold interest rate at current levels until early 2016 because inflation is still too far below the Fed's target. Jul copper (HGN15 -0.32%) is down -0.31%.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.50%) is up +0.43%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.30%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY)is up +0.34%.

Jun T-note prices (ZNM15 -0.10%) are down -6 ticks.
Chicago Fed President Evans, speaking at the Swedbank Global Seminar in Stockholm, said that the Fed is on a "meeting-by-meeting basis in decision making, at least in terms of the funds rate." He added "my own projection is that it will take quite some time" for inflation to meet target; that's why "I'm in favor of the current level accommodation to continue."
