BARCHART MORNING CALL 9/4

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -0.96%) are down -1.03% and European stocks are down -2.23% on anxiety ahead of U.S. Aug non-farm payrolls where a stronger-than-expected report may bolster the case for a Fed rate hike as soon as this month. A larger-than-expected decline in German Jul factory orders is also fueling selling in European stocks. The markets will also be alert to the meeting of central bankers and finance ministers at this weekend's G-20meeting in Ankara, Turkey. Emerging stocks closed lower on U.S. rate hike concerns along with worries that China will pare back support for equities following this week's military parade. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan -2.15%, Hong Kong -0.45%, China closed for holiday, Taiwan -1.18%, Australia +0.25%, Singapore -1.47%, South Korea -1.09%, India -2.18%. Dec T-note prices (ZNZ15 +0.26%) are up +11.5 ticks at a 1-week high as weakness in equities boosts the safe-haven demand of government debt.
In a draft communique prepared ahead of this weekend's G-20 meeting in Ankara, Turkey, global central bankers and finance ministers expressed concern about the potential disruption a Fed rate increase may due to emerging markets as the draft said "In line with the improving economic outlook, monetary policy tightening is more likely in some advanced economies, which may remain one of the main sources of uncertainty in financial markets."

MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 +0.22%) this morning are up +7.00 points (+0.36%). Wednesday's closes: S&P 500 +1.83%, Dow Jones +1.82%, Nasdaq +2.74%. The S&P 500 on Wednesday closed higher on (1) strength in technology stocks after Apple, Microsoft and Intel rose over 2%, (2) reduced expectations for a Fed rate hike after the Aug ADP employment change of +190,000 was weaker than expectations of +200,000 and July factory orders rose +0.4%, weaker than expectations of +0.9%.
Dec 10-year T-notes (ZNZ15 +0.12%) this morning are up +3 ticks. Wednesday's closes: TYZ5 -5.00, FVZ5 -3.00. Dec T-notes on Wednesday closed lower on reduced safe-haven demand with the rally in stocks, and on the relatively strong Beige Book report that raised the possibility that the Fed will go ahead with its rate hike move this year. T-notes received some support from news of tame wage pressures after U.S. Q2 unit labor costs were revised lower to -1.4%.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.03%) this morning is up +0.084 (+0.09%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0005 (-0.04%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down-0.05 (-0.04%). Wednesday's closes: Dollar Index +0.378 (+0.40%), EUR/USD -0.0088 (-0.78%), USD/JPY +0.96 (+0.80%). The dollar index on Wednesday closed higher on (1) weakness in EUR/USD after Eurozone PPI fell -0.1% m/m and -2.1% y/y, which shows benign inflation pressures that may prod the ECB into expanding stimulus, and (2) the upbeat Fed Beige Book which may sway the Fed to raise interest rates this year.
Oct crude oil (CLV15 -0.13%) this morning is down -19 cents (-0.41%) and Oct gasoline (RBV15 +0.58%) is up +0.0108 (+0.76%). Wednesday's closes: CLV5 +0.84 (+1.85%), RBV5 +0.0344 (+2.46%). Oct crude and gasoline prices on Wednesday recovered from early losses and closed higher on the -1.3%drop in U.S. crude production in the week ended Aug 28 to a 6-3/4 month low and on the rally in U.S. stocks. Crude oil prices were undercut by the +4.67 million bbl surge in weekly EIA crude inventories and news that President Obama has now gained veto-proof support in the Senate for the Iranian nuclear agreement, which virtually ensures that sanctions will be dropped on Iran late this year or early next year.

BARCHART MORNING CALL 9/2

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 +0.55%) are up +0.43% and European stocks are up +0.12% as prices consolidate following the sharp 2-day decline. Bargain hunting in commodity producers and mining stocks is giving the overall market a lift with BHP Billiton Ltd. and Rio Tinto Group both up over 1%, although gains were muted as a decline in oil prices pressures energy producers. Emerging markets closed lower on concern that the slowdown in China's economy will curb global growth. Asian stocks closed mostly lower as well: Japan -0.39%, Hong Kong -1.18%, China -0.20%, Taiwan +0.22%, Australia +0.10%, Singapore -0.16%, South Korea +0.16%, India -0.95%. China's Shanghai Composite pared losses again in the final hour of trade for a sixth day, rallying from down nearly 5% to under 1%, amid possible stock purchases by government-backed funds. Chinese government stock purchases over the past week in the final hour of trade are part of government efforts to ensure that nothing detracts from a military parade on Thursday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. China's financial markets will be closed for the rest of this week in observance of the event.

Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 +0.55%) this morning are up +8.25 points (+0.43%). Tuesday's closes: S&P 500 -2.96%, Dow Jones -2.84%, Nasdaq -3.09%. The S&P 500 on Tuesday closed sharply lower on the -0.3 point decline in the Chinese manufacturing PMI index to a 3-year low of 49.7 and the the -1.6point drop in the Aug U.S. ISM manufacturing index to a 2-1/4 year low of 51.1. In addition, basic-resource and energy stocks showed weakness as the slower-than-expected manufacturing data from the U.S. and China raised demand concerns and undercut commodity prices.
Dec 10-year T-notes (ZNZ15 +0.07%) this morning are up +4.5 ticks. Tuesday's closes: TYZ5 +8.00, FVZ5 +5.75. Dec T-notes on Tuesday closed higher on speculation that the weaker-than expected Aug ISM manufacturing index will keep the Fed from raising interest rates and on concern that China's economic slowdown has deepened after the China Aug manufacturing PMI fell to a 3-year low, sending global stock markets reeling and boosting the safe-haven demand for government debt.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.26%) this morning is up +0.226 (+0.24%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0053 (-0.47%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.67 (+0.56%). Tuesday's closes: Dollar Index -0.374 (-0.39%), EUR/USD +0.0104 (+0.93%), USD/JPY -1.86 (-1.53%). The dollar index on Tuesday closed lower on the decline in the Aug ISM manufacturing index to a 2-1/4 year low, which may keep the Fed from raising interest rates. Oct crude oil (CLV15 -2.14%) this morning is down -$1.22 a barrel (-2.69%) and Oct gasoline (RBV15 +0.09%) is down -0.0109 (-0.78%). Tuesday's closes: CLV5 -3.79 (-7.70%), RBV5 -0.1266 (-8.45%). Oct crude oil and gasoline on Tuesday closed sharply lower on global demand concerns after the China Aug manufacturing PMI fell to a 3-year low and the Aug U.S. ISM manufacturing index fell to a 2-1/4 year low. BARCHART MORNING CALL 9/1

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -1.96%) are down sharply by -2.13% and European stocks are down -2.02% on concern the slowdown in China is deepening. Global stock and commodity markets all fell after a gauge of Chinese manufacturing activity last month contracted at the fastest pace in 3 years. European stocks also fell after the Eurozone Aug Markit manufacturing PMI was revised lower, but stock prices recovered from their worst levels after the Eurozone Jul unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to the lowest in 3-1/2 years. Asian stocks closed lower: Japan -3.84%, Hong Kong -2.24%, China -1.23%, Taiwan -1.92%, Australia -2.12%, Singapore -1.32%, South Korea -1.40%, India -2.23%. Emerging market stocks and currencies all declined after the slowdown in Chinese manufacturing activity intensified, although large-capitalization stocks in China's Shanghai Composite rebounded from their lows in late trading on signs of government intervention. Over each of the past four session, government-backed-funds have been seen buying stocks in the last hour of trading as China tries to stabilize the market before a WWII victory parade on Thursday. China's financial markets will be closed on Thursday and Friday to commemorate the event.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.27%) is down -0.32%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.48%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.93% as the slide in global stocks boosts the safe-haven demand for the yen.
Dec T-note prices (ZNZ15 +0.25%) are up +10.5 ticks on a flight to safety.

The Eurozone Jul unemployment rate unexpectedly fell -0.2 to 10.9%, better than expectations of unch at 11.1% and the lowest in 3-1/2 years.

MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -1.96%) this morning are down sharply by -42.00 points (-2.13%). Monday's closes: S&P 500 -0.84%, Dow Jones -0.69%, Nasdaq -1.26%. The S&P 500 on Monday closed lower on the -0.82% slide in the China Shanghai Composite and on the -0.3 point decline in the Aug Chicago PMI to 54.4, weaker than expectations of -0.2 to 54.5. Energy producer stocks strengthened as oil prices rallied sharply for the third session to post a new 1-month high.
Dec 10-year T-notes (ZNZ15 +0.25%) this morning are up +10.5 ticks. Monday's closes: TYZ5 -4.50, FVZ5 -4.00. Dec 10-year T-note prices on Monday posted a 1-week low and closed lower on the slide in German bund prices to a 6-week low (after the Eurozone Aug core CPI rose +1.0% y/y, stronger than expectations of +0.9% y/y) and on hawkish weekend comments from Fed Vice Chair Fischer suggesting that he favors raising interest rates sooner rather than later when he said that that there's "good reason" to believe that inflation is poised to move higher. T-notes found underlying support on the weaker-than-expected Aug Chicago PMI and Aug Dallas Fed manufacturing activity report and on safe-haven demand with the sell-off in stocks.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.27%) this morning is down -0.307 (-0.32%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0054 (+0.48%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -1.13 (-0.93%). Monday's closes: Dollar Index -0.282 (-0.29%), EUR/USD +0.00283 (+0.25%), USD/JPY -0.496 (-0.41%). The dollar index on Monday closed lower on (1) the larger-than-expected declines in the Aug Chicago PMI index and the Aug Dallas Fed manufacturing activity index, and (2) strength in EUR/USD after the Eurozone Aug CPI was stronger than expected and dampened speculation of additional ECB stimulus. The dollar found underyling support on the comments from Fed Vice Chair Fischer who left open the door for a Fed rate hike in Sep when he said that there's "good reason" to believe that inflation is poised to move higher.
Oct crude oil (CLV15 -1.91%) this morning is down -$1.10 a barrel (-2.24%) and Oct gasoline (RBV15 -2.94%) is down -0.0457 (-3.05%). Monday's closes: CLV5 +3.98 (+8.80%), RBV5 +0.0699 (+5.00%). Oct crude oil and gasoline on Monday closed sharply higher with Oct crude at a 1-month high and Oct gasoline at a 2-week high. Bullish factors included (1) the weaker dollar, (2) the IEA's downward revision in its U.S. crude production estimate for the first half of 2015 to 9.4 million bpd from a previous estimate of 9.53 million bpd, and (3) OPEC's comment in its monthly magazine that it is ready to talk to other crude producers outside of OPEC in order to achieve "fair prices."
