Southwest Airlines - Barchart's Chart of the Day

Southwest Airlines (LUV) is the Barchart Chart of the Day.  The air carrier has a Trend Spotter buy signal, a Weighted Alpha of 131.41+, gained 146.33% last year and paid a .71% dividend.

The Chart of the Day is Southwest Airlines (LUV).  I found the stock by sorting the New High list for new high frequency o the last month, then used the Flipchart feature to review the charts. Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy on 6/19 the stock gained 25.07%.

Southwest Airlines (LUV) is a major domestic airline that provides primarily shorthaul, high-frequency, point-to-point, low-fare service. Southwest operates over Boeing 737 aircraft in numerous cities. Southwest has the lowest operating cost structure in the domestic airline industry and consistently offers the lowest and simplest fares. Southwest also has one of the best overall Customer Service records.

December E-mini S&Ps (ESZ14 unch) this morning are down -0.01% and European stocks are up +0.02% as the markets await U.S. retail sales data for Aug later today. The ruble tumbled to a record low of 37.7265 per dollar and Russia threatened retaliation against the new round of sanctions imposed on it by the EU and U.S. The EU added 15 Russian companies and 24 people to the list of those affected by its sanctions against Russia, while President Obama said late Thursday that the U.S. will "deepen and broaden" its measure's against Russia's financial, energy and defense industries. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan +0.25%, Hong Kong -0.27%, China +0.61%, Taiwan -1.07%, Australia -0.27%, Singapore -0.05%, South Korea +0.61%, India +0.24%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Index climbed to an 8-month high as Japan's exporters continue to garner strength from a slide in the yen, which dropped to a fresh 5-3/4 year low against the dollar today. Commodity prices are mixed. Oct crude oil (CLV14 +0.38%) is up +0.32%. Oct gasoline (RBV14 +0.40%) is up +0.30%. Eurozone Jul industrial production rose +1.0% m/m and +2.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m and +1.4% y/y.
Eurozone Q2 employment rose +0.2% q/q and +0.4% y/y, the largest increase in 3 years.
The German Aug wholesale price index fell -0.2% m/m, the largest monthly decline in 21 months. On an annual basis, Aug wholesale prices fell -0.6% y/y.
UK Jul construction output was unch m/m and up +2.6% y/y, weaker than expectations of +0.6% m/m and +3.2% y/y.
China Aug new yuan loans were 702.5 billion yuan, slightly more than expectations of 700.0 billion yuan. Aug M2 money supply rose +12.8% y/y, less than expectations of +13.5% y/y and the slowest pace of increase in 5 months.
Japan Jul industrial production was revised higher to +0.4% m/m and -0.7% y/y from the originally reported +0.2% m/m and -0.9% y/y.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
The market is expecting today’s Aug retail sales report to show an increase of +0.6% and +0.3% ex-autos, thus improving from July’s weak report of unchanged and +0.1% ex-autos. The market is expecting today’s preliminary-Sep U.S. consumer confidence index from the University of Michigan to show a +0.8 point increase to 83.3, adding to the +0.7 point increase to 82.5 seen in August. The market is expecting today’s July business inventories report to show a solid increase of +0.4%, adding to the +0.4% increase seen in June. The market is expecting today’s Aug import price index to show a -1.0% m/m decline following the -0.2% m/m decline in July. There is one Russell 1000 company that reports earnings today: Darden Restaurants (consensus: $0.32).

Also, signs of weaker economic conditions in China that may undercut global growth hurt stocks after Chinese consumer inflation reached a 4-month low last month. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan +0.76%, Hong Kong -0.17%, China -0.37%, Taiwan -0.37%, Australia -0.51%, Singapore +0.26%, South Korea -0.87%, India -0.23%. Weakness in the yen propelled Japanese exporters and pushed the Nikkei Stock Index up to a 7-1/2 month high. Commodity prices are mostly lower. Oct crude oil (CLV14 -1.17%) is down -1.10% at a fresh 16-month low after the IEA cut its 2015 global oil demand forecast to 93.8 million bpd, -165,000 bpd less than predicted last month. ECB Governing Council member and Bank of Italy Governor Visco said that "In the Eurozone, recent data indicates that growth perspectives remain subdued and economic weakness is no longer confined to countries under stress." He added that "averting the risk that a too-prolonged period of low inflation would eventually lead to a dis-anchoring of medium-term inflation expectations is paramount" and "if needed, further monetary-policy actions can be undertaken."
The IfW Kiel economic institute cut its 2014 German GDP estimate to +1.4% from a Jun forecast of +.0% and cut its 2015 German GDP estimate to +1.9% from +2.5%, citing geopolitical risks damping exports
China Aug CPI rose +2.0% y/y, less than expectations of +2.2% y/y and the slowest pace of increase in 4 months. Aug PPI fell -1.2% y/y, a bigger decline than expectations of -1.1% y/y.
Japan Q3 BSI large all-industry business conditions rose to 11.1 from -14.6 in Q2. Q3 BSI large manufacturing business conditions rose to 12.7 from -13.9 in Q2.

The market is expecting today’s initial unemployment claims report to show a small -2,000 decline to 300,000 following last week’s +4,000 increase to 302,000. The Treasury today will sell $13 billion of 30-year T-bonds, concluding this week’s $61 billion coupon package. There are two Russell 1000 companies that report earnings today: Ulta Salons (consensus: $0.83), Kroger ((0.69).

September E-mini S&Ps (ESU14 -0.04%) this morning are up +0.08% and European stocks are up +0.03% on the prospects for a sustained peace in Ukraine after Ukrainian President Poroshenko said that Russia has withdrawn more than 70% of its troops from his country. Global stocks also found support on comments from Chinese Premier Li Keqiang who said that his country will accelerate policy changes to promote growth. Li Keqiang added that the Chinese economy will avoid a hard-landing and that his government will ensure a medium to high growth rate as it deepens policy changes to promote business, attract foreign investment and protect intellectual property. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan +0.25%, Hong Kong -1.93%, China -0.52%, Taiwan -0.82%, Australia -0.60%, Singapore -0.13%, South Korea closed for holiday, India -0.76%. Japanese stocks bucked the trend of lower Asian markets and closed higher as exporter stocks rallied on the prospects for improved earnings after the yen slumped to a fresh 5-3/4 year low against the dollar. Commodity prices are mixed. Oct crude oil (CLV14 -0.42%) is up +0.09%. Oct gasoline (RBV14 -0.14%) is up +0.18%. Dec gold (GCZ14 +0.36%) is up +0.50%. Dec copper (HGZ14 +0.24%) is down -0.18%. Japan Jul machine orders rose +3.5% m/m, less than expectations of +4.0% m/m. On an annual basis, Jul machine orders rose +1.1% y/y, double expectations of +0.5% y/y.
