BARCHART MORNING CALL 10/28

BARCHART MORNING CALL

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
December E-mini S&Ps (ESZ15 +0.23%) are up +0.19% and European stocks are up +0.65% as Apple climbed nearly 2% in pre-market trading after reporting better-than-expected quarterly profits late yesterday. The markets also await the Fed's interest rate announcement later today as to whether there will be an interest rate increase this year. European stocks also garnered support from a decline in the German 10-year bund yield to a 5-1/2 month low of 0.431% on the prospects of additional ECB easing after comments from ECB Executive Board member Coeure who said have been "lively" discussions within the ECB about additional measures to promote growth and boost inflation. Asian stocks settled mostly lower: Japan +0.67%, Hong Kong -0.80%, China -1.72%, Taiwan -0.41%, Australia -0.20%, Singapore -0.39%, South Korea -0.10%, India -0.78%. China's Shanghai Composite fell on growth concerns after the Oct Westpac-MNI consumer sentiment fell to a record low and after UBS cut its China 2016 GDP forecast to 6.2% from 6.5%. Japanese stocks were the only bright spot in Asian markets as the Nikkei Stock Index closed higher on speculation the BOJ will increase stimulus when it meets this Thursday and Friday.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.17%) is down -0.14%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.14%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.11%.
Dec T-note prices (ZNZ15 -0.07%) are down -2 ticks.
ECB Executive Board member Coeure said that the risks have increased that inflation will remain below the ECB's goal of 2.0% and that warrants vigilance from policy makers. He added that there have been "lively" discussions within the ECB of whether the deposit rate could be lowered from its current -0.2%or about expanding asset purchases.
The China Oct Westpac-MNI consumer sentiment fell -8.5 to 109.7, the lowest since the data series began in 2007.

MARKET COMMENTS
Dec E-mini S&Ps (ESZ15 +0.23%) this morning are up +4.00 points (+0.19%). Tuesday's closes: S&P 500 -0.25%, Dow Jones -0.24%, Nasdaq +0.18%. The S&P 500 index on Tuesday closed lower on signs of weak capital spending after Sep capital goods orders non-defense ex-aircraft unexpectedly fell-0.3% (vs expectations of +0.2%) and on the -5.0 point decline in U.S. Oct consumer confidence to 97.6 (vs expectations of -0.2 to 102.8). There were also some concerns that the FOMC in its post-meeting statement on Wednesday might adopt less dovish language to allow for a December rate hike, although the FOMC is unanimously expected to leave interest rates unchanged.
Dec 10-year T-notes (ZNZ15 -0.07%) this morning are down -2 ticks. Tuesday's closes: TYZ5 +10.50, FVZ5 +6.75. Dec T-notes on Tuesday settled higher on carryover support from a rally in German bunds to a 5-1/2 month high, the larger-than-expected -5.0 point decline in U.S. Oct consumer confidence, and increased safe-haven demand with the sell-off in stocks.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.17%) this morning is down -0.139 (-0.14%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0016 (+0.14%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down-0.13 (-0.11%). Tuesday's closes: Dollar Index +0.045 (+0.05%), EUR/USD -0.0007 (-0.06%), USD/JPY -0.64 (-0.53%). The dollar index on Tuesday settled higher on weakness in GBP/USD, which fell to a 1-1/2 week low after UK Q3 GDP grew at a slower-than-expected pace. In addition, EUR/USD saw weakness on ECB Governing Council member Nowotny's comment that the Eurozone is "still in this situation of very low inflation rates," which bolstered speculation that the ECB may expand QE.
Dec crude oil (CLZ15 +0.88%) this morning is up +34 cents (+0.79%) and Dec gasoline (RBZ15 +0.91%) is up +0.0088 (+0.69%). Tuesday's closes: CLZ5-0.59 (-1.34%), RBZ5 -0.0018 (-0.14%). Dec crude oil and gasoline on Tuesday closed lower with Dec crude at a 2-month low. Crude oil prices were undercut by the stronger dollar, the sharp -5.0 point drop in U.S. consumer confidence, and expectations for Wednesday's weekly EIA report to show that crude inventories rose by +3.5 million bbl.

BARCHART MORNING CALL 8/31

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -0.83%) are down -0.82% and European stocks are down -0.52% as Chinese stocks fell on concern China's efforts to prop up its equity market will fail. Another negative for global stock and commodity markets was hawkish comments from Fed and ECB members at the Kansas City Fed's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Fed Vice Chair Fischer said there's "good reason" to believe that inflation is poised to move higher and ECB Vice President Constancio said that the link between real activity and inflation in the Eurozone has "strengthened." Losses in European stocks were contained after German Jul retail sales came in stronger than expected. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan -1.28%, Hong Kong +0.27%, China -0.82%, Taiwan +1.94%, Australia -1.08%, Singapore -1.17%, South Korea +0.19%, India -0.41%. China's Shanghai Composite fell even after people familiar with the matter said China's securities regulator asked brokerages to increase stock buybacks and step up their support for stock prices by contributing 100 billion yuan ($15.7 billion) to China's market rescue fund. Japanese stock prices were also pressured after Japan Jul industrial production came in weaker than expected.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.14%) is down -0.13%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.21% after Eurozone Aug CPI rose at a faster pace than expected. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.36%.
Sep T-note prices (ZNU15 +0.09%) are up +3 ticks.
Comments from Fed Vice Chair Fischer Saturday at the Kansas City Fed's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, WY, suggest he favors an interest rate increase sooner rather than later when he said "given the apparent stability of inflation expectations, there is good reason to believe that inflation will move higher as the forces holding down inflation dissipate further."
ECB Vice President Constancio said at the Fed's symposium in Jackson Hole, WY, that "the link between inflation and real activity appears to have strengthened in the Eurozone recently."
The Eurozone Aug CPI estimate rose +0.2% y/y, higher than expectations of +0.1% y/y. Aug core CPI rose +1.0% y/y, higher than expectations of +0.9% y/y.
Japan Jul industrial production fell -0.6% m/m and rose +0.2% y/y, weaker than expectations of +0.1% m/m and +0.8% y/y.
German Jul retail sales rose +1.4% m/m and +3.3% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.1% m/m and +1.7% y/y.

MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -0.83%) this morning are down -16.25 points (-0.82%). Friday's closes: S&P 500 +0.063%, Dow Jones -0.07%, Nasdaq +0.10%. The S&P 500 on Friday closed little changed. Stocks were undercut by the +0.3% increase in U.S. Jul personal spending, less than expectations of +0.4%, and by the unexpected -1.0 point decline in U.S. Aug University of Michigan consumer sentiment to 91.0, weaker than expectations of +0.1 to 93.0. Stocks found support on Friday's +4.8% rally in China's Shanghai Composite and strength in energy producers after crude oil rallied to a 2-week high.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU15 +0.09%) this morning are up +3 ticks. Friday's closes: TYU5 -5.00, FVU5 -7.75. Sep T-notes on Friday closed lower on the stable U.S. stock market and Friday's +4.8% rally in the Chinese Shanghai index. T-notes were also hurt by Cleveland Fed President Mester's comment that the U.S. economy "is solid and could support an increase in interest rates" despite recent market turmoil. T-notes found support on the decline in the U.S. Jul core PCE deflator, the Fed's preferred gauge of inflation, to a 4-1/3 year low of +1.2% y/y.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.14%) this morning is down -0.128 (0.13%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0024 (+0.21%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.44 (-0.36%). Friday's closes: Dollar Index +0.496 (+0.52%), EUR/USD -0.00698 (-0.62%), USD/JPY +0.668 (+0.55%). The dollar index on Friday climbed to a 1-week high and closed higher on the increases in U.S. Jul personal spending and income that were close to expectations, and weakness in EUR/USD which fell to a 1-week low on speculation the ECB may expand stimulus after ECB Executive Board member Praet said that policy makers are ready to act if they perceive a material shift in inflation risks.

BARCHART MORNING CALL 8/3

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 unch) are down -0.04%, led by a decline in basic-resource companies and energy producers, as the price of copper (HGU15 -0.83%) dropped to a 6-year low on concerns over Chinese demand and crude oil (CLU15 -1.57%) tumbled to a 4-1/4 month low on concern the global supply glut will persist after Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said Iran can raise oil output by 500,000 bpd within a week of the end of sanctions. European stocks are up +0.68% on signs of improving company earnings after Heineken NV and Commerzbank AG both reported better-than-expected earnings results. Another positive for European stocks was the upward revision to the Eurozone Jul Markit manufacturing PMI. European stocks rose despite the -17.24% plunge in Greek stocks which reopened after a 5-week suspension. The Greek economy is in shambles as it trys to recover from its debt crisis after the Greek Jul Markit manufacturing PMI collapsed to a record low of 30.2 from 46.9 in Jun. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan -0.18%, Hong Kong -0.91%, China -1.11%, Taiwan -1.63%, Australia -0.35%, Singapore -0.30%, South Korea -1.15%, India +0.26%. MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 unch) this morning are down -0.75 of a point (-0.04%). Friday's closes: S&P 500 -0.23%, Dow Jones -0.32%, Nasdaq -0.01%. The S&P 500 on Friday closed the day mildly lower on some pre-weekend long liquidation pressure and on the downward revision in the final-July U.S. consumer sentiment index to 93.1 from the preliminary-July level of 93.3, which was substantially weaker than market expectations of +0.7 to 94.0. Stocks received some underlying support from the rally in T-notes and the stronger-than-expected July Chicago PMI report of +5.3 to 54.7 vs expectations of +1.4 to 50.8.
Sep 10-year T-note prices (ZNU15 +0.06%) this morning are up +1 tick. Friday's closes: TYU5 +19, FVU5 +12. Sep 10-year T-notes on Friday rallied sharply on the much weaker-than-expected +0.2% increase in the Q2 ECI, which indicated weaker inflation pressure. T-notes also received a boost after the Treasury on Thursday concluded its $105 billion weekly T-note package.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.17%) this morning is up +0.133 (+0.14%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0024 (-0.22%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.33 (+0.27%). Friday's closes: Dollar Index -0.224 (-0.23%), EUR/USD -0.0006 (-0.05%), USD/JPY +0.11 (+0.09%). The dollar index on Friday closed mildly lower on the weak U.S. ECI report, which gives the Fed less reason to raise interest rates.
Sep crude oil (CLU15 -1.57%) this morning is down -71 cents (-1.57%) at a 4-1/4 month low and Sep gasoline (RBU15 -1.86%) is down -0.0336 (-1.90%). Friday's closes: CLU5 -1.40 (-2.89%), RBU5 +0.0030 (+0.17%). Sep crude oil and gasoline on Friday closed mixed. Crude oil prices continued to see downward pressure on expectations for a boost in Iranian oil late this year when sanctions are dropped since it does not appear that Republicans have enough Democratic support to gain a veto-proof way of stopping President Obama from dropping Iranian sanctions.
