MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH14 +0.08%) this morning are up +2.00 points (+0.11%). The S&P 500 on Thursday opened lower on economic concerns after U.S. Jan retail sales fell -0.4% and were unchanged ex-autos, weaker than expectations of unch and +0.1% ex-autos, and after U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly rose +8,000 to 339,000, higher than expectations of -1,000 to 330,000. However, stocks recovered their losses and closed higher on speculation the weaker-than-expected economic data was weather related along with increased M&A activity after Comcast agreed to buy Time Warner Cable for $45.2 billion. Closes: S&P 500 +0.58%, Dow Jones +0.40%, Nasdaq 100 +0.89%.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH14 +0.06%) this morning are up +0.5 of a tick. Mar 10-year T-note futures prices on Thursday closed higher on concern that U.S. economic growth is slowing after Jan retail sales unexpectedly declined and after weekly jobless claims rose more than expected. Another supportive factor for T-notes was bond-dealer short covering after the Treasury concluded its Feb refunding with Thursday’s $16 billion 30-year T-bond auction. Closes: TYH4 +16.00, FVH4 +10.25.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.29%) this morning is down -0.173 (-0.22%) at a 1-1/4 month low. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0030 (+0.22%) at a 2-1/2 week high. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.36 (-0.35%). The dollar index on Thursday dropped to a 3-week low and closed lower after an unexpected decline in U.S. Jan retail sales and an unexpected increase in weekly initial unemployment claims fueled concerns about economic growth and boosted speculation that the Fed may slow the pace of QE tapering. Closes: Dollar index -0.356 (-0.44%), EUR/USD +0.00869 (+0.64%), USD/JPY -0.362 (-0.35%).
Mar WTI crude oil (CLH14 -0.26%) this morning is down -40 cents (-0.40%) and Mar gasoline (RBH14 -0.33%) is down -0.0081 (-0.29%). Mar crude and gasoline prices Thursday closed mixed. Crude prices fell back after an unexpected decline in U.S. Jan retail sales and an unexpected increase in weekly jobless claims bolstered concerns about the economy and energy demand. Energy prices recovered from their worst levels and gasoline closed higher after the dollar index fell to a 3-week low and after stock prices rallied. Closes: CLH4 -0.02 (-0.02%), RBH4 +0.0141 (+0.51%).

MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH14 -0.44%) this morning are down -9.50 points (-0.52%). The S&P 500 on Wednesday posted a 2-week high after China Jan exports rose +10.6% y/y, well above expectations of +0.1% y/y, which eased concern about slowing Chinese economic growth. Stocks fell back and settled little changed, however, after St. Louis Fed President Bullard said “right now we’re on track” to continue tapering bond purchases. Closes: S&P 500 -0.03%, Dow Jones -0.19%, Nasdaq 100 +0.16%.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH14 +0.19%) this morning are up +8.5 ticks. Mar 10-year T-note futures prices on Wednesday posted a 2-week low on hawkish comments from St. Louis Fed President Bullard who said “right now we’re on track” to continue tapering bond purchases and “will be able to move out of the program later this year.” T-notes were also undercut by supply pressures as the Treasury auctioned $24 billion in 10-year T-notes on Wednesday and will auction $16 billion of T-bonds on Thursday as it concludes the Feb quarterly refunding. Closes: TYH4 -10.50, FVH4 -6.00.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.41%) this morning is down -0.341 (-0.42%) at a 2-1/2 week low. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0070 (+0.51%) at a 2-week high. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.52 (-0.51%). The dollar index on Wednesday closed higher. Mar WTI crude oil (CLH14 -0.57%) this morning is down -61 cents (-0.61%) and Mar gasoline (RBH14 -0.68%) is down -0.0210 (-0.76%). Mar crude and gasoline prices Wednesday closed higher with Mar crude at a 3-3/4 month high and Mar gasoline at a 1-1/4 month high. Bullish factors included (1) increased Chinese oil demand after China Jan crude imports jumped +12% y/y to a record 28.15 MMT, (2) the -2.673 million bbl decline in crude supplies at Cushing, OK, the delivery point for WTI futures, to a 3-month low of 37.603 million bbl, and (3) the -1.853 million bbl decline in weekly EIA gasoline inventories, a bigger drop than expectations of -10,000 bbl. Equity Lifestyle Properties - Barchart's Chart of the Day

Equity Lifestyle Properties (ELS) is the Barchart Chart of the Day.  The REIT has a Trend Spotter buy signal, a Weighted Alpha of 10.40+ and gained 7.67% in the last year.  Together with the dividend yield of 2.52% that's a total return of 10.19%.

The Chart of the Day is Equity Lifestyle Properties (ELS).  I found the stock by sorting today's New High List for frequency in the last month, skipped over the stocks that didn't have positive gains for the past week and month then used the Flipchart feature to review the charts.  Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy on 1/3 the stock gained 8.37%.

Equity Lifestyle Properties, Inc. (ELS) is a self-administered, self-managed, real estate investment trust.

Barchart's Opinion trading systems are listed below. Please note that the Barchart Opinion indicators are updated live during the session every 10 minutes and can therefore change during the day as the market fluctuates. The indicator numbers shown below therefore may not match what you see live on the Barchart.com web site when you read this report.

  • Relative Strength Index 72.25%

  • Recently traded at 40.00 with a 50 day moving average of 37.05
Fundamental factors:
  • Market Cap $3.33 billion

  • Revenue expected to decrease 3.90% this year but increase again by 2.60% next year
  • Earnings are estimated to increase by 28.70% this year, an additional 4.80% next year and continue to increase for the next 5 years at an annual rate of 4.50%
  • Wall Street analysts issued 4 strong buy, 1 buy and 3 hold recommendations on the stock
Right now there is still a flight from growth stocks to income stocks.  I caution you that the herd is usually late to the party so if you have it hold it and look for an exit point when the momentum stops.

5 Large Caps with Momentum

Today I used Barchart to sort the S&P 500 Large Cap Index to find the stocks that had price advances in at least 50% of the trading sessions in the last month.  I then eliminated the stocks that did not have positive returns in the last week and month and used the Flipchart feature to review the charts.

MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH14 +0.04%) this morning are little changed, down -0.25 of a point (-0.01%). The S&P 500 on Tuesday climbed to a 2-week high and closed higher after comments from Fed Chair Yellen bolstered optimism in the U.S. economy when she said economic growth has strengthened and there is "broad improvement" in the labor market. Yellen added that while growth has picked up, "the recovery in the labor market is far from complete" and that the FOMC is likely to continue to taper QE in "measured steps." Her comments boosted speculation the U.S. economy is strong enough to handle further cuts in stimulus. Closes: S&P 500 +1.11%, Dow Jones +1.22%, Nasdaq 100 +1.11%.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH14 -0.12%) this morning are down -7 ticks. Mar 10-year T-note futures prices on Tuesday fell back after Fed Chair Yellen said that that the FOMC is likely to continue to taper QE in "measured steps," which was less dovish than market expectations. T-notes were also undercut on supply pressures with the Treasury auctioning $70 billion of T-notes and T-bonds in this week's Feb quarterly refunding. Closes: TYH4 -11.50, FVH4 -7.50.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.14%) this morning is up +0.075 (+0.09%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0055 (-0.40%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.35 (-0.34%). The dollar index Tuesday fell to a 1-1/2 week low and closed slightly lower. Negative factors included (1) reduced safe-haven demand for the dollar after the S&P 500 rallied up to a 2-week high, and (2) comments from Fed Chair Yellen who said the labor market recovery is "far from complete," which boosted speculation that the Fed will be slow to remove its overly easy monetary policies. Closes: Dollar index -0.004 (-0.01%), EUR/USD -0.0008 (-0.06%), USD/JPY +0.371 (+0.36%).
Mar WTI crude oil (CLH14 +0.62%) this morning is up +46 cents (+0.46%) and Mar gasoline (RBH14 +0.76%) is up +0.0131 (+0.48%), both at 1-1/2 month highs. Mar crude and gasoline prices Tuesday settled mixed. Bullish factors included (1) the slide in the dollar index to a 1-1/2 week low, (2) expectations for weekly EIA distillate supplies to fall 2.25 million bbl on Wed due to increased demand for heating fuels, and (3) strength in gasoline on supply concerns after researcher Energy Aspects Ltd. said that an average of 1.6 million bpd of U.S. refining capacity will be offline this month due to seasonal maintenance and unplanned shutdowns. Crude prices erased gains and closed lower after Fed Chair Yellen said the Fed will continue to taper QE3. Closes: CLH4 -0.12 (-0.12%), RBH4 +0.0278 (+1.02%).
