I Challenge Warren Buffet

They say the best way to make your goals come true is to put them in writing and publish them to let all your friends know what they are. For years I have said that an individual investor following a few simple rules can beat a professional investor.
This year I'm going to show not just 1 but 3 different ways an individual investor can even beat Warren Buffet. I'm going to take 3 of my Marketocracy funds and share all the trades on Barchart, Seeking Alpha, ValueForum and my Facebook pages, I'll let Ken Kam of Marketocracy Capital management keep score and at the end of the year we'll publish the results and see if Warren Buffet or I win.
The funds I'll use on Marketocracy will be VMNHI, VMSPC and VMVLS.
Let the game Begin.

Barchart Morning Call 1/18

Overnight Developments
  • March E-mini S&Ps this morning are little changed. Last night's positive Chinese GDP report of +7.9% was offset by negative news from several high-profile companies. Intel is down about 5% in European trading this morning after reporting another quarter of declining sales. AT&T is down 1.5% after reporting a $10 billion pension charge and saying that smartphone subsidies hurt earnings. Capital One fell 7% in overnight trading on an earnings miss. European stocks this morning are down -0.12%. Asian stocks today closed higher on support from the Chinese GDP report. Japan closed +2.86%, Hong Kong closed +1.12%, and China closed +1.67%. Commodity prices this morning are slightly higher by +0.10%. Feb crude oil is down -0.16%, Feb gasoline is down -0.39%, Feb gold is up +0.08%, March copper is up +0.38%, grains are up +0.5%, and livestock and softs are mixed. The dollar index is up +0.26%, EUR/USD is down -0.23%, and USD/JPY is little changed. March 10-year T-note prices are up 3 ticks.
  • The Chinese Q4 GDP report last night of +7.9% y/y was slightly stronger than market expectations of +7.8% and was up from the 3-1/2 year low of +7.4% posted in Q3. The slightly stronger-than-expected Chinese Q4 GDP report was a relief to the global stock markets, which have been heavily relying on the narrative of a recovering Chinese economy.
  • In other Chinese data released last night, China's Dec industrial production rose +10.3% y/y, slightly above expectations of +10.2 and Nov's +10.1%. Dec retail sales rose +15.2% y/y, slightly above expectations of +15.1% and up from Nov's +14.9%.
  • China's Dec property price report showed that year-on-year prices for new residential apartments rose in 40 of the 70 major cities surveyed, up sharply from 25 cities in Nov and 21 cities in Oct and Sep. Prices for existing residential apartments rose in 25 of the 70 cities surveyed, up from 18 cities in Nov and 15 cities in Oct. The report means the government will maintain its various measures designed to try to curb property prices.
  • The U.K. Dec retail sales ex-auto fuel report of -0.3% m/m and +1.1% y/y was weaker than market expectations of +0.1% m/m and +2.0% y/y. The report indicated disappointing UK retail sales spending and suggested that weak UK economic growth will continue.
  • UK Prime Minister David Cameron postponed his speech in Amsterdam today regarding the UK's need to revise its relationship with the EU. The postponement was due to the hostage crisis at the natural gas facility in Algeria, which involved some British citizens.
    Market Comments
    • March E-mini S&Ps this morning are little changed after negative reports from several key companies offset optimism about the stronger-than-expected Chinese Q4 GDP report of +7.9%. The S&P 500 index on Thursday rallied to a 5-year high and closed higher after better-than-expected economic data on jobs and housing bolstered optimism in the economic outlook. U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims fell by a more than expected -37,000 to a 5-year low of 335,000 and Dec housing starts rose by a more-than-expected +12.1% to a 4-1/2 year high of 954,000. A bearish factor was the unexpected -10.4 point decline in the Jan Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index to -5.8. Closes: S&P 500 +0.56%, Dow Jones +0.63%, Nasdaq +0.45%.
    • March 10-year T-notes this morning are up 3 ticks. March 10-year T-note prices on Thursday slumped and finished lower on reduced safe-haven demand when the S&P 500 posted a 5-year high on signs the economic recovery is strengthening. U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims fell to a 5-year low and U.S. Dec housing starts surged to a 4-1/2 year high. Closes: TYH3 -13.5, FVH3 -7.75.
    • The dollar index this morning is up +0.21 (+0.26%), EUR/USD is down -0.0031 (-0.23%) and USD/JPY is little changed. The dollar index on Thursday fell back and closed lower after a rally in the S&P 500 to a 5-year high reduced the safe-haven demand for the dollar. USD/JPY strengthened to a 2-1/2 year high after the Nikkei newspaper reported that the BOJ will ease monetary policy at its next meeting. Closes: Dollar index -0.155 (-0.19%), EUR/US +0.00865 (+0.65%), USD/JPY +1.483 (+1.68%).
    • Feb WTI crude oil this morning is down -0.15 (-0.16%) and Feb gasoline is down -0.0109 (-0.39%). Feb crude oil and gasoline prices on Thursday rallied sharply and closed higher as Feb crude climbed to a 3-3/4 month high on economic optimism after U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims fell more than expected to a 5-year low and U.S. Dec housing starts rose more than expected to a 4-1/2 year high. Closes: CLG3 +1.25 (+1.33%), RBG3 +0.0470 (+1.73%). Other bullish factors for energy prices included a weaker dollar, the rally in the S&P 500 to a 5-year high, and an increase in geopolitical risks in North Africa after an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group took hostages at a natural gas complex in Algeria.

Barchart.com's Chart of the Day - Equifax (EFX)
The "Chart of the Day" is Equifax (EFX), which showed up on Thursday's Barchart "All-Time High" list. Equifax posted an all-time Thursday at $57.24 and closed up +0.53%. TrendSpotter has been long since Jan 2 at $54.74. In recent news on the stock, Equifax's latest National Consumer Credit Trends Report released on Thursday, showed the amount of new credit card limits opened in the first three quarters of 2012 hit $675 billion, up from just $523 billion during the same period in 2010 as consumer credit cards continue their recovery with new credit originations returning to levels last seen three years ago. Equifax officials also noted that new auto loans hit a five-year high in September, mirroring the improvement economists have seen in unsecured borrowing. Equifax, with a market cap of $6.824 billion, is one of the leaders in facilitating and securing commerce by bringing buyers and sellers together world-wide through information, transaction processing and Internet businesses. Japan closed +0.72%, Hong Kong closed -0.14%, and China closed +0.70%. Commodity prices are mildly higher by +0.13%. Feb crude oil is down -0.10%, Feb gasoline is down -0.29%, Feb gold is up +0.55%, March copper is down -0.39%, grain prices are up about +0.6% on average, and livestock and softs are mostly lower. The dollar index is up +0.15%, EUR/USD is down -0.43%, and USD/JPY is sharply lower by -1.15%. March 10-year T-note prices are up 8.5 ticks.
  • Japanese preliminary Dec machine tool orders weakened to -27.5% y/y from -21.3% in Nov.
  • German Q4 GDP fell -0.5% q/q (-2.0% q/q annualized), according to a preliminary estimate from the German Federal Statistics Office. Overall German GDP growth in 2012 slid to +0.7% from +3.0% in 2011. Notably, German produced a budget surplus of 0.1% of GDP in 2012, an improvement from a 0.8% deficit in 2011.
  • The UK Dec CPI rose +0.5% m/m and +2.7% y/y, which was in line with market expectations. The Dec core CPI eased to +2.4% y/y from +2.6% in Nov and was weaker than market expectations of +2.6%. UK inflation remains above the BOE's limit of 2% and continues to discourage the BOE from further easing at this point.
  • The Eurozone Nov adjusted trade balance rose to 11.0 bln euros from a revised 7.4 bln euros in Oct and was larger than market expectations of 8.0 bln euros. The report was supportive for EUR/USD.

  • Spain today successfully sold 5.75 billion euros of bills, more than the target of 5.5 billion euros.
    Market Comments
    • March E-mini S&Ps this morning are down -4.25 points on the -0.48% sell-off in European stocks and on increased worries about the debt ceiling battle. The S&P 500 index on Monday closed mildly lower as concern rose about the debt ceiling battle after President Obama at a surprise press conference continued to indicate that he does not plan to negotiate with House Republicans over a debt ceiling hike, highlighting the impending battle that could easily result in at least a government shut-down. The Nasdaq index fell -0.46% on a sharp 3.6% sell-off in Apple on a report that Apple is curbing iPhone production due to weak demand. Closes: S&P 500 -0.09%, Dow Jones +0.14%, Nasdaq -0.46%.
    • March 10-year T-notes this morning are up 8.5 ticks on the lower trade in stocks and debt ceiling worries. March 10-year T-note prices on Monday closed mildly higher on some increased safe-haven demand with the impending debt ceiling battle.
    • The dollar index this morning is up +0.12 points (+0.15%) on increased safe-haven demand. EUR/USD is down -0.0057 (-0.43%). USD/JPY is sharply lower by -1.03 (-1.15%) as the Japanese government seems to be getting nervous about the extent of the yen's plunge in recent weeks. The dollar index on Monday closed slightly lower on continued technical weakness with the new 2-week low. EUR/USD closed higher despite a weaker-than-expected Eurozone industrial production report. Closes: Dollar index -0.08 (-0.09%), EUR/USD +0.0039 (+0.29%),USD/JPY +0.30 (+0.34%).
    • Feb WTI crude oil prices this morning are down -0.09 (-0.10%) and Feb gasoline is down -0.0079 (-0.29%). Feb crude oil and gasoline prices on Monday closed higher on the slightly lower close in the dollar index and on carry-over support from the reopening of the Seaway pipeline last Friday with an expanded capacity of 400,000 bpd (vs 150,000 bpd), which will help dampen inventories at the Cushing hub where WTI crude oil futures are priced. Crude oil and gasoline prices were able to rally even though increases are expected for tomorrow's DOE inventory report for crude oil, gasoline and distillates. Closes: CLG3 +0.58 (+0.62%), RBG3 +0.0146 (+0.53%).
