OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
December E-mini S&Ps (ESZ15 +1.21%) are up sharply by +1.20% and European stocks are up +3.08% after Fed Chair Yellen late yesterday said the Fed is on course to raise interest rates later this year, which suggests the Fed has confidence that the U.S. economy is strong enough to handle an interest rate increase. The dollar index jumped to a 5-week high, while gold and government bond prices fell on expectations for a Fed rate hike. Asian stocks settled mixed: Japan +1.76%, Hong Kong +0.43%, China -1.60%, Taiwan +0.11%, Australia -0.58%, Singapore -0.46%, South Korea -0.20%, India closed for holiday. Japan's Nikkei Stock Index recovered from a 2-week low and closed higher on speculation the BOJ may expand stimlus measures after Japanese Aug consumer prices ex-food and energy fell by the most in over 2 years. China's Shanghai Composite closed lower on concern over capital outflows from China after an estimated record $141.66 billion left China in Aug after the PBOC devalued the yuan, surpassing the previous record outflow of $124.62 billion in Jul, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.46%) is up +0.36% at a 5-week high. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.59%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.62% at a 2-week high.
Dec T-note prices (ZNZ15 -0.29%) are down -10.5 ticks.
Speaking after the markets closed yesterday, Fed Chair Yellen said "most of my colleagues and I anticipate that it will likely be appropriate to raise the target range for the federal funds rate sometime later this year."

Internap (INAP -1.29%) slumped over 20% in after-hours trading after it lowered guidance on 2015 revenue to $320 million-$325 million, below consensus of $331.6 million,

The S&P 500 on Thursday sold off to a 3-week low on concerns about global economic growth after Caterpillar, the world’s biggest mining and construction machinery manufacturer, slumped to a 5-year low when it cut its 2015 revenue and sales estimates. There were also concerns about U.S. growth after the Aug Chicago Fed national activity index showed a -0.92 point decline to a 6-month low of -0.41, weaker than expectations of-0.10 to 0.24. Stocks saw some underlying support from the +5.7% increase in U.S. Aug new home sales to a 7-1/2 year high of 552,000, stronger than expectations of +1.6% to 515,000.

December E-mini S&Ps (ESZ15 -0.84%) are down -0.75% and European stocks are down -1.60% at a 1-month low as automakers fell, led by a -7.5%decline in BMW AG, after the German newspaper Autobild reported that diesel emissions from BMW's X3 model exceeded EU pollution limits by as much as eleven times in a real-world road test. European stock losses were limited after German Sep IFO business confidence unexpectedly rose. Emerging market stocks fell and Norway's krone tumbled 2% against the euro after the Norges Bank, Norway's central bank, unexpectedly cut interest rates to a record low. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan -2.76%, Hong Kong -0.97%, China +0.86%, Taiwan -0.86%), Australia +1.47%, Singapore closed for holiday, South Korea unchanged, India +0.16%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Index fell to a 2-week low after Japanese markets reopened following a 3-day holiday. China's Shanghai Composite closed higher as Chinese technology stocks rallied on speculation President Xi Jinping's state visit to the U.S. will lead to higher exports.

The German Sep IFO business climate unexpectedly rose +0.1 to 108.5, better than expectations of -0.4 to 107.9.
Norges Bank Governor Olsen said "growth prospects for the Norwegian economy have weakened, and inflation is projected to abate further out" as the Norges Bank cut the overnight deposit rate by 25 bp to a record low 0.75% and forecast that the overnight rate may fall as low as 0.59% by Q3 of 2016.
The Japan Sep Nikkei manufacturing PMI fell -0.8 to 50.9, a bigger decline than expectations of -0.5 to 51.2.

The S&P 500 Wednesday fell to a 2-week low and closed lower on negative carryover from the -2.19% drop in the Shanghai Composite on Chinese growth concerns after the China Sep Caixin manufacturing PMI unexpectedly fell -0.3 to 47.0, weaker than expectations of +0.2 to 47.5 and the lowest in 6-1/2 years. In addition, energy and basic-resource stocks sold off after commodity prices fell.

Wednesday's closes: TYZ5 -4.50, FVZ5 -2.00. Dec T-notes Wednesday fell back from a 4-week high and closed lower on negative carryover from a slide in German bund prices after ECB President Draghi curbed speculation the ECB will expand stimulus by saying that it is "too soon" to say whether to boost its bond buying. Stocks had been weaker and emerging markets closed mostly lower after a gauge of Chinese manufacturing activity unexpectedly fell to its lowest in 6-1/2 years. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan closed for holiday, Hong Kong -2.29%, China -2.19%, Taiwan -2.06%, Australia -2.07%, Singapore-0.79%, South Korea -1.85%, India +0.67%.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.12%) is down -0.11% as it fall back from a 2-week high. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.36% and recovered from a 2-week low after ECB Governing Council member Nowotny said he's wary of expanding QE. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.06%.

ECB Governing Council member Nowotny said he's wary of increasing QE any time soon and that the question of whether more easing is needed "deserves a much more thorough examination."
The China Sep Caixin manufacturing PMI unexpectedly fell -0.3 to 47.0, weaker than expectations of +0.2 to 47.5 and the steepest pace of contraction in 6-1/2 years.
The Eurozone Sep Markit manufacturing PMI fell -0.3 to 52.0, right on expectations and matched April's reading as the slowest pace of growth in 7 months.

In addition, raw-material and energy-producer stocks saw weakness after commodity prices slumped. Meanwhile, biotech and pharmaceutical stocks sold-off after Hillary Clinton said she will propose price caps and research-and-development spending guidelines for the pharmaceutical industry.
