The 5 Best NASDAQ 100 Stocks Today

Nothing spectacular to report  but it looks like the market may have bottomed out.  Below is a chart of the Value Line Arithmetic Index of 1700 stocks which shows the price vs the 20, 50 and 100 day moving averages plus a 14 day turtle channel.  It does not indicate a rebound but does show movement off a bottom.

My support level on major indexes is the 50-100 Day MACD Oscillator and you can see that we are below that level and climbing slightly.  I usually say above the 20 DMA - On Your Mark; above the 50 DMA - Get Set and when you are above the 100 DMA - GO!.

In addition, when I consider the 10,000+ stocks in the Barchart data base the majority are still trading below their moving averages.  As I write this article the percentage trading above their DMAs are:

  • 42.13% - 20 DMA
  • 20.09% - 50 DMA
  • 21.07% - 100 DMA
At the bottom I can say : "Runners" but not "On your mark" just yet.

This morning I used Barchart to sort the NASDAQ 100 stocks first for the highest technical buy signals, then I used the Flipchart feature to review the charts.  Nothing here to really brag about but here are 5 stocks that weren't hurt too bad in the recent market weakness.

MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH16 +0.84%) this morning are up +14.25 points (+0.76%). Thursday's closes: S&P 500 +0.55%, Dow Jones +0.79%, Nasdaq +1.39%. The S&P 500 on Thursday closed higher on the rally in crude oil to a 3-week high, which lifted energy producing stocks, and the -16,000 decline in U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims to 278,000, a bigger decline than expectations of -12,000 to 281,000. Stocks were undercut by (1) concern that companies are cutting back on capital investment after U.S. Dec capital goods orders non-defense ex-aircraft fell -4.3%, weaker than expectations of -0.2% and the biggest decline in 10 months, and (2) the +0.1% m/m and +3.1% y/y increase in U.S. Dec pending home sales, weaker than expectations of +0.9% m/m and +4.8% y/y.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH16 +0.39%) this morning are up +19 ticks at a contract high. Thursday's closes: TYH6 +5.50, FVH6 +4.00. Mar T-notes on Thursday closed higher on carryover support from a rally in German bunds to an 8-1/2 month high and on the weaker-than-expected U.S. Dec durable goods orders. T-notes were undercut by reduced safe-haven demand with the rally in stocks and by the rally in crude that boosted inflation expectations after the 10-year T-note breakeven inflation rate rose to a 1-week high.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.59%) this morning is up +0.555 (+0.56%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0018 (-0.16%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +2.08 (+1.75%) at a 5-week high. Thursday's closes: Dollar Index -0.392 (-0.40%), EUR/USD +0.0047 (+0.43%), USD/JPY +0.14 (+0.12%). The dollar index on Thursday dropped to a 2-week low and closed lower on negative carryover from Wednesday's post-FOMC meeting statement that adopted more dovish language and on the weaker-than-expected U.S. Dec durable goods orders report, which adds to evidence of slowing growth that may further delay additional Fed rate hikes.
Mar crude oil (CLH16 +0.93%) this morning is up +7 cents (+0.21%) and Mar gasoline (RBH16 -0.21%) is down -0.0060 (-0.55%). Thursday's closes: CLH6 +1.42 (+4.40%), RBH6 +0.0536 (+5.02%). Mar crude oil and gasoline on Thursday closed sharply higher with Mar crude at a 3-week high and Mar gasoline at a 2-1/2 week high. Crude oil prices were boosted by the fall in the dollar index to a 2-week low and by heavy fund short covering after Russia’s Energy Minister said he may meet with OPEC next month to discuss a potential coordinated cut in crude output.

The S&P 500 on Wednesday closed lower on negative carryover from the -0.52% drop in China's Shanghai Composite to a 13-3/4 month low, weakness in technology stocks after Apple fell by more than 6% on smaller-than-expected Q2 revenue indications, and some disappointment that the FOMC's post-meeting statement was not more dovish.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH16 unch) this morning are down -0.5 of a tick. Wednesday's closes: TYH6 +8.50, FVH6 +4.75. Mar T-notes on Wednesday closed higher on the slide in stocks that boosted the safe-haven demand for T-notes, and the post-FOMC meeting statement said that the Fed was watching global developments closely and that it expects to raise interest rates at a "gradual" pace. Gains were limited after U.S. Dec new home sales rose at the fastest pace in 10 months.

Wednesday's closes: Dollar Index -0.458 (-0.46%), EUR/USD +0.0023 (+0.21%), USD/JPY +0.26 (+0.22%). The dollar index on Wednesday closed lower as the post-FOMC meeting statement adopted more dovish language and as the rally in crude oil boosted the Canadian dollar to a 3-week high against the dollar.
Mar crude oil (CLH16 +0.03%) this morning is up +13 cents (+0.40%) and Mar gasoline (RBH16 +2.16%) is up +0.0200 (+1.87%). Wednesday's closes: CLH6 +0.71 (+2.26%), RBH6 -0.0008 (+0.07%). Mar crude oil and gasoline on Wednesday closed higher as Mar gasoline recovered from a contract low. Crude oil prices were boosted by the weaker dollar and by the -771,000 bbl decline in crude oil supplies at Cushing, OK, the delivery point for WTI futures, the first decline in twelve weeks. Crude oil prices were undercut by the +8.38 million bbl surge in weekly EIA crude supplies and the +3.46 million bbl increase in weekly EIA gasoline stockpiles to 248.46 million bbl, more than expectations of +1.0 million bbl and a 15-3/4 year high.
