Barchart Morning Call 8/3

Barchart Morning Call
Overnight Developments
  • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are up by +0.95% and European stocks are up with the Euro Stoxx 50 up +2.62%. EUR/USD is up +0.85% and the dollar index is down -0.72% before this morning's U.S. July nonfarm payrolls report. Italian and Spanish government bonds rebounded following Thursday's rout with the 10-year Italian yield down -22 bp to 6.068% and Spain's 10-year yield down -17 bp to 6.91% as it falls back below the critical 7.00% yield level. Commodity prices are mostly higher with crude oil up +1.31% and copper up +0.64%. Agricultural prices are mostly weaker with Dec corn down -0.60% and Nov soybeans down -0.15%. • Asian stocks today closed mostly lower: Japan -1.13%, Hong Kong -0.12%, China +0.81%, Australia -1.13%, South Korea -1.25%, India -0.15%. Chinese stocks finished higher following a cut in transaction fees on share trading after the Asian markets closed yesterday.
  • European and U.S. stocks gained, the EUR/USD rose and Italian and Spanish government bond yields fell after ECB Council member and Bank of Finland President Liikanen said "the euro is irreversible" and the ECB will take control and cool market turmoil once it completes details of a new bond purchasing program. He added that the size of the new program would be "adequate to reach its objective" of lowering Italian and Spanish borrowing costs.
  • German final-July services PMI was unexpectedly revised up by +0.6 to 50.3 from the originally reported 49.7.
  • Euro-Zone final-July composite PMI was unexpectedly revised higher by +0.1 to 46.5 from the originally reported 46.4.
  • Euro-Zone June retail sales unexpectedly rose +0.1 m/m and fell -1.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of -0.1% m/m and -1.9% y/y.
  • U.K. July services PMI unexpectedly fell -0.3 to 51.0, weaker than expectations of +0.3 to 51.6.
  • China's July non-manufacturing PMI fell -1.1 to 55.6.
  • In a quarterly report released today, the PBOC said it will keep pursuing a "prudent" monetary policy and that it will conduct "policy fine-tuning" at an appropriate time and consumer inflation may rebound after August, which suggests the PBOC may be slow to ease policy.
    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are up +13.00 points (+0.95%) after comments from ECB Council member Liikanen fueled a rally in EUR/USD and helped push down Spanish and Italian government bond yields. The U.S. stock market Thursday tumbled throughout the day and finished lower on concern the European debt crisis will drag on when ECB President Draghi failed to take immediate steps to alleviate the crisis: S&P 500 -0.75%, Dow Jones -0.71%, Nasdaq 100 -0.36%. Other negatives included the rise in 10-year Spanish bond yields above the critical 7.00% yield level and the unexpected decline in June U.S. factory orders.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are down -9.5 ticks on reduced safe-haven demand as equities rally. Sep 10-year T-note prices on Thursday rallied and settled higher on increased safe-haven demand after global stocks plunged when the ECB failed to take immediate action to support the economy or combat the debt crisis: TYU2 +15, FVU2 +4.7. An unexpected drop in June U.S. factory orders and a surge in Spanish and Italian government bond yields also lent support to Treasuries.
    • The dollar index this morning is weaker with EUR/USD +0.85% and USD/JPY +0.03%. The dollar index on Thursday bounced off of a 4-week low and closed higher as inaction by the ECB on the European debt crisis fueled a sell-off in global stocks and increased the safe-haven demand for the dollar: Dollar index +0.303 (+0.36%), EUR/USD -0.00456 (-0.37%), USD/JPY -0.203 (-0.26%).
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are up +$1.14 a barrel (+1.31%). Sep gasoline is down -0.0013 (-0.05%) cents per gallon . Crude oil and gasoline prices Thursday settled mixed as refinery outages across the U.S. boosted gasoline on supply concerns while crude closed lower on concern that inaction by the ECB on the European debt crisis will prolong the crisis and weaken energy demand: CLU2 -1.78 (-2.00%), RBU2 +0.0354 (+1.25%). A stronger dollar and an unexpected fall in June U.S. factory orders were additional negatives for crude prices.

GILD 57.29 +3.66 +6.82%
The "Chart of the Day" is Gilead Sciences (GILD), which showed up on Thursday's Barchart "All-Time High" list. Gilead gapped higher on Thursday, posted an all-time high of $58.84 and closed up +6.82%. TrendSpotter has been long Gilead since June 27 at $51.25. Gilead surged Thursday after rival drugmaker Bristol-Myers suspended a study of one of its hepatitis C drug candidates after at least one patient suffered heart failure. Bristol-Myers has been in a race with Gilead to develop the next generation of hepatitis C treatments, according to Bernstein analyst Dr. Tim Anderson. Gilead bought hepatitis C drug developer Pharmasset in January for $11.1 billion. The deal gave it several experimental hepatitis treatments, including one labeled GS-7977 that many analysts see as promising. Credit Suisse analyst Catherine Arnold said that because Gilead's GS-7977 isn't associated with major safety issues, investors will view the company's hepatitis C program more positively. Gilead Sciences with a market cap of $41.1 billion, is an independent biopharmaceutical company that seeks to provide accelerated solutions for patients and the people who care for them. They have a broad-based focus on developing and marketing drugs to treat patients with infectious diseases, including viral infections, fungal infections and bacterial infections, and a specialized focus on cancer.

RAI 46.52 +0.25 +0.54%
The "Chart of the Day" is Reynolds American (RAI), which showed up on Wednesday's Barchart "All-Time High" list. RAI on Wednesday posted a new all-time high of $46.84 and closed up +0.54%. TrendSpotter has been long RAI since June 13 at $41.74. U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon on Wednesday denied an FDA motion to dismiss a lawsuit by Lorillard Inc. and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. filed last year that alleges financial conflict of interest and bias by several members of the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committees. The suit specifically alleges that some committee members have conflicts of interest because they were paid expert witnesses in anti-tobacco lawsuits and have financial ties to pharmaceutical companies that make smoking-cessation products. Last Tuesday, RAI reported Q2 adjusted earnings of 79 cents per share, beating expectations of 76 cents as the company focuses on cigarette alternatives such as snuff and chewing tobacco for future sales growth as tax hikes, smoking bans, health concerns and social stigma make the cigarette business tougher. Reynolds American with a market cap of $26.6 billion, is the parent company of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, Inc., Lane Limited and R.J. Reynolds Global Products, Inc. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, the second- largest U.S. tobacco company, manufactures about one of every three cigarettes sold in the United States, including five of the nation's 10 best-selling brands.

    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are up 2.50 points (+0.18%). The U.S. stock market on Monday closed lower: S&P 500 -0.05%, Dow Jones -0.02%, Nasdaq 100 -0.19%. The S&P 500 Index fell back from a 2-3/4 month high and finished lower on profit-taking as investors lightened up on some of their long positions ahead of this week's data on U.S. manufacturing and jobs along with the results of the FOMC and ECB policy meetings. Stocks remain buffeted though on hopes the FOMC at its 2-day meeting Tuesday and Wednesday might implement additional easing moves along with the possibility the ECB may ramp up its buying of European sovereign debt to contain the recent surge in government yields.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are up +2 ticks. Sep 10-year T-note prices on Monday rebounded from last Friday's sharp losses and closed higher: TYU2 +14, FVU2 +7.2. T-note prices rallied Monday on increased safe-haven demand as stocks faltered along with speculation the ECB may not do enough to stem the European sovereign-debt crisis.

The dollar index on Monday closed higher: Dollar index +0.085 (+0.10%), EUR/USD -0.00014 (-0.01%), USD/JPY -0.07 (-0.01%). EUR/USD weakened on speculation the ECB will expand its balance sheet to stem the rise of European government bond yields, which is negative for the euro. Weaker stock prices also prompted a safe-haven bid for dollar assets although a fall in Spain's 10-year bond yield to a 2-week low limited declines in the euro.
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are higher by +17 cents a barrel (+0.19%). Sep gasoline is down -0.0088 (-0.31%). Crude oil and gasoline prices Monday finished mixed as a strong dollar and weak stocks undercut crude but gasoline settled higher on supply concerns after Enbridge Energy Partners shut down an oil pipeline from Superior, Wisconsin into Chicago and refinery outages were reported in the Chicago area at Citgo Petroleum's Lemont, Illinois plant and at BP's Whiting, Indiana refinery: CLU2 -0.35 (-0.39%), RBU2 +0.0217 (+0.78%).

    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are down -0.24% on weak bank stocks after Deutsche Bank lowered its rating on JPMorgan Chase. The U.S. stock market on Friday closed sharply higher for the second straight session: S&P 500 +1.91%, Dow Jones +1.46%, Nasdaq 100 +2.41%. The U.S. stock market continued to rally on optimism about ECB President Draghi's push for a bond purchase program for Spain and Italy to keep their bond yields down to manageable levels. Friday's U.S. Q2 GDP report of +1.5% was line with market expectations and was strong enough to avert concerns that the U.S. economy might be headed toward recession. The U.S. stock market also continued to receive support from hopes that the FOMC at its meeting on July 31-Aug 1 might implement additional easing moves.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are down -1.5 ticks. Sep 10-year T-note prices on Friday closed sharply lower: TYU2 -29, FVU2 -12. T-note prices plunged on reduced safe-haven support as ECB President Draghi pushes for a significant bond purchase program. In addition, Friday's U.S. Q2 GDP report of +1.5% was strong enough to avert recent worries about recession and deflation and to dampen hopes for further FOMC easing moves or QE3.
    • The dollar index this morning is stronger with EUR/USD -0.42% and USD/JPY -0.29%. The dollar index on Friday closed mildly lower: Dollar index -0.099 (-0.12%), EUR/USD +0.0039 (+0.32%), USD/JPY +0.25 (+0.32%). The dollar index on Friday posted a new 1-month low and EUR/USD posted a new 1-month high. The dollar index on Friday closed lower on reduced safe-haven support from ECB President Draghi's push for a new bond purchase program and on the U.S. GDP report of +1.5% that was no worse than market expectations. The Spanish 10-year bond yield last week fell 53 bp to 6.70% while Italian bond yield fell by 21 bp to 5.94%.
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are up +2 cents a barrel (+0.02%). Sep gasoline is up +0.62 of a cent per gallon (+0.22%). Crude oil rallied on Friday on hopes for improved global economic growth and improved fuel demand if Europe can contain its debt crisis. The crude oil market was also relieved by the U.S. Q2 GDP report of +1.5%.
