March E-mini S&Ps (ESH14 +0.29%) this morning are up +0.33% and European stocks are up +0.32% on better-than-expected stock earnings results. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan -0.08%, Hong Kong +0.64%, China -1.51%, Taiwan -0.19%, Australia -0.06%, Singapore +0.22%, South Korea -0.74%, India -0.95%. European stocks also received a boost on stronger-than-expected UK retail sales along with a drop in government bond yields. The yield on Portugal's 10-year bond fell for a sixth day after Standard & Poor's removed the country's debt rating from "creditwatch," which reduces the risk of a downgrade. Commodity prices are mixed. Feb crude oil (CLG14 +0.95%) is up +0.60%. Feb gasoline (RBG14 +0.92%) is up +0.37%. Feb gold (GCG14 -0.02%) is up +0.04%. March copper (HGH14 +0.49%) is down -0.25%. Portugal's long-term government bond rating was removed from "creditwatch" by Standard & Poor's who said the action by the coalition Portuguese government to stick to the EU-led bailout program has reduced the risk of a credit downgrade.
UK Dec retail sales ex autos jumped +2.8% m/m, well ahead of expectations of +0.3% m/m and the biggest monthly gain in 5-1/2 years. On a year-over-year basis, Dec retail sales ex autos surged +6.1% y/y, nearly double expectations of and +3.2% y/y and the largest annual increase in 9-1/4 years.
UK Dec retail sales including autos jumped +2.6% m/m, well ahead of expectations of +0.3% m/m and the biggest monthly gain in 3-3/4 years. On a year-over-year basis, Dec retail sales including autos rose +5.3% y/y, over double expectations of +2.5% y/y and the biggest annual increase in 9-years.
Eurozone Nov construction output fell -0.6% m/m, the third straight monthly decline, and fell -1.7% y/y, the ninth consecutive year-over-year decrease.
Japan Dec consumer confidence unexpectedly fell -1.2 to 41.3, weaker than expectations of a +0.5 point increase to 43.0.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
Today’s early-Jan U.S. consumer confidence index from the University of Michigan is expected to show a +1.0 point increase to 83.5, adding to the +7.4 point increase to 82.5 seen in December. Today’s Dec housing starts report is expected to show a decline of -9.3% to 990,000, reversing part of the +22.1% surge to 1.091 million seen in November. Today’s Dec industrial production report is expected to show a +0.3% m/m increase, adding to the +1.1% surge seen in November.

Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH14 +0.29%) this morning are up +6.00 points (+0.33%). The S&P 500 on Thursday fell back from Wednesday’s record high after mixed quarterly earnings results spurred profit-taking and long liquidation. Declines were subdued after U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims fell -2,000 to a 6-week low of 326,000 and after the Jan Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index rose +3.0 to 9.4, slightly stronger than expectations of 8.7. Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH14 +0.08%) this morning are up +1 tick. Mar 10-year T-note futures prices on Thursday closed higher. Pressuring crude prices was a report from OPEC saying that increased crude production from producers outside of OPEC will result in reduced demand for OPEC crude by -300,000 barrels a day this year compared with last year. Gasoline prices were undercut by negative carry-over from Wednesday’s EIA inventory report that showed weekly EIA gasoline stockpiles surged +6.183 million bbl to an 11-month high of 233.152 million bbl. Vascular Solution - Barchart's Chart of the Day

Vascular Solutions (VASC) is the Barchart Chart of the Day.  The medical equipment company has a Trend Spotter buy signal, a Weighted Alpha of 68.70+ and gained 50.68% in the last year.


The Chart of the Day is Vascular Solutions (VASC).  I found the stock by sorting the New High List for frequency in the last month and skipped any stocks that didn't have a positive gain for the last week and month.  I next used the Flipchart feature to review the charts.  Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy on 12/20 the stock gained 11.65%.

Vascular Solutions Inc. manufactures, markets and sells the Vascular Solutions Duett sealing device, which enables cardiologists and radiologists to rapidly seal the puncture site following catheterization procedures such as angiography, angioplasty and stenting. Its product combines a simple balloon catheter delivery mechanism with a powerful, proprietary procoagulant. The company believes its product offers advantages over both manual compression and the three other FDA-approved devices used to seal the puncture site following the catheterization.

Eurozone Dec new car registrations jumped +13.3% y/y to 906,000, the fourth consecutive monthly gain and the largest monthly increase in nearly 4-years.
China Dec foreign direct investment rose +3.3% y/y, better than expectations of +2.5% y/y.
Japan Dec domestic CGPI rose +0.3% m/m, right on expectations, and gained +2.5% y/y, less than expectations of +2.6% y/y.
Japan Nov machine orders rose +9.3% m/m, well above expectations of +1.1% m/m and the biggest increase in 6-months. On a year-over-year basis, Nov machine orders climbed +16.6% y/y, better than expectations of +11.7% y/y.
The Japan Nov tertiary industry index rose +0.6% m/m, less than expectations of +0.7% m/m, and Oct was revised lower to -0.9% m/m from the originally reported -0.7% m/m.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
Today’s Dec CPI is expected to increase to +1.5% y/y from +1.2% in November. Meanwhile, the Dec core CPI is expected to be unchanged from November at +1.7% y/y. Today’s weekly initial unemployment claims report is expected to show a small decline of -2,000 to 328,000, adding to last week’s decline of -15,000 to 330,000. Meanwhile, today’s continuing claims report is expected to show a decline of -15,000 to 2.850 million, reversing part of last week’s increase of +50,000 to 2.865 million. Today’s Jan Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index is expected to show a small +2.2 point increase to 8.6, reversing most of December’s decline of -2.8 to 6.4. Today’s Jan NAHB housing market index is expected to be unchanged at 58, holding its ground after the +4 point increase to 58 seen in December.

Best Buy (BBY +1.40%) fell over 9% in pre-market trading after it reported holiday sales for the nine weeks ended Jan 4, 2014 were down -0.8% compared to teh same period last year.
UnitedHealth Group (UNH +1.11%) reported Q4 EPS of $1.41, right on expectations.
PNC Financial Services Group (PNC +1.08%) reported Q4 EPS of $1.83, better than consensus of $1.64.

The World Bank raised its 2014 global GDP estimate to 3.2%, up from a June projection of 3.0% and stronger than the 2.4% increase in 2013. The bank lowered its 2014 China GDP forecast to 7.7% from 8.0% forecast in Jun, but raised its Eurozone GDP estimate to 1.1% from 0.9%, and kept its U.S. GDP estimate at 2.8% and its projection for Japan GDP at 1.4%.
German 2013 GDP growth expanded at a +0.4% y/y annualized pace, weaker than expectations of +0.5% y/y annualized and the slowest pace of growth in 4-years.
China Dec new yuan loans were 482.5 billion yuan, less than expectations of 570.0 billion yuan and the lowest in a year.
Japan Dec machine tool orders jumped +28.0% y/y, the most in 2-1/3 years.
The Eurozone Nov trade balance (nsa) widened to a 17.1 billion euro surplus from a revised 16.8 billion euro surplus in Oct.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
Today’s Jan Empire manufacturing index is expected to show a +2.52 point increase to 3.50, adding to the small +3.19 point increase to 0.98 seen in December. Today’s Dec PPI report is expected to rise to +1.1% y/y from +0.7% in November. Meanwhile, the Dec core PPI is expected to be unchanged from November at +1.3% y/y. The Fed today will release its Beige Book survey of the economy in preparation for the upcoming FOMC meeting in two weeks (Jan 28-29). The Fed’s last Beige Book report, released on Dec 4, found that the U.S. economy “continued to expand at a modest to moderate pace from early October through mid-November.”

The S&P 500 on Tuesday recovered nearly all of Monday’s losses on reduced economic concerns after U.S. Dec retail sales rose +0.2% and +0.7% ex-autos, better than expectations of +0.1% and +0.4% ex-autos. Stocks also found carry-over support from gains in European equities after Eurozone Nov industrial production rose +1.8% m/m, stronger than expectations of +1.4% m/m, and after ECB Governing Council member Nowotny said “there is potential on the upside” for this year’s GDP in the Eurozone and that economic growth may exceed expectations. It is a molecular diagnostics company focused on developing and commercializing its proprietary eSensor(R) detection technology. The eSensor' XT-8 system is the second generation in GenMark Dx's eSensor' platform, utilizing electrochemical detection technology to detect nucleic acids on a microarray. The XT-8 System enables multiplex detection of DNA and RNA targets. The Company has developed four diagnostic tests for use with its XT-8 System. Its Cystic Fibrosis Genotyping Test, which detects pre-conception risks of cystic fibrosis, and its Warfarin Sensitivity Test, which determines an individual's ability to metabolize the oral anticoagulant warfarin, have received FDA clearance. It has also developed a Respiratory Viral Panel Test, which detects the presence of major respiratory viruses, and a Thrombosis Risk Test, which detects an individual's increased risk of blood clots.
