Only 2 Mid Cap Stocks Made the Cut

THE NUMBERS DON'T ADD UP

Something I learned long ago was the Economy and the Stock Market are two very separate entities. Normally they correlate and we have an expanding economy and as stocks prices climb an expanding stock market capitalization and everyone is happy

I always try to be on the right side of the market by noticing if both the economy and stock market are expanding at the same time.  When one is expanding and the other is contracting I get worried.  When both are contracting I panic and sit out the next few dances.

On August 20  The Conference Board released their monthly  report on their Leading and Coincident Economic Indicators:  Conference Board LEI Press Release

In that report they said the Leading Economic Indicators DECLINED by 0.2%,

My proxy for the Stock Market is the Value Line Arithmetic Index, an unweighted index of the 1700 stocks followed by the Value Line Investment Survey which in aggregate contains over 95% of the entire US public companies' capitalization.

Look at this chart:

Look at these Barchart Technical indicators:

  • 96% Barchart technical sell signals
  • Trend Spotter sell signals
  • Below its 20, 50 and 100 day moving averages
  • Weighted Alpha Negative 10.07
  • 12.65% off its 52 week high
  • Relative Strength Index 31.41%
  • 50-100 Day MACD Oscillator Sell signal
My interpretation of these numbers is the Economy is contracting and the Capitalization of the Stock Market is contracting.

I don't know about you but I'm comfortable with my cash position and will sit on the sideline till these two indicators reverse.

No S&P 500 Large Cap Pick Today

Each week I rotate through the S&P 500 Large Cap, S&P 400 Mid Cap, S&P 600 Small Cap, NASDAQ 100 and Russell 3000 stocks to give you the 5 Best Stocks of the Day from those screenings.  NOT TODAY!

I use a very strict technical analysis selection process:

  • Positive Weighted Alpha
  • Barchart technical buy signals of 80% or better based on Barchart's 13 technical indicators
  • Buy signal on 50-100 Day MACD Oscillator
  • Buy signal Trend Spotter
  • 50%+  14 Day Relative Strength Index
  • Positive 1,3 and 6 month price change
  • Not more than 10% off of 52 week high
At the time of my screening process the was not a single S&P 500 Large Cap stock that passed the test.

My advice is to sit it out, keep your powder dry and wait for the market to strengthen.

Maybe tomorrow but I have no crystal ball.

Stocks rallied early Tuesday on China's fifth rate cut in nine months and on the +10.5 point jump in the U.S. Aug consumer confidence (Conference Board) to 101.5, stronger than expectations of +3.5 to 93.4 and the highest in 7 months.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU15 +0.18%) this morning are up +9 ticks. Tuesday's closes: TYU5 -1-4.5/32, FVU5 -17.25. Sep T-notes on Tuesday closed sharply lower on (1) reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes as global stock markets rallied sharply on the Chinese rate cut, and (2) the large-than-expected increase in U.S. Aug consumer confidence to a 7-month high.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.07%) this morning is up +0.020 (+0.02%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0094 (-0.82%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.75 (+0.63%). Tuesday's closes: Dollar Index +1.198 (+1.286%), EUR/USD -0.01019 (-1.02%), USD/JPY +0.432 (+0.36%). The dollar index on Tuesday closed higher on reduced safe-haven demand for the yen as USD/JPY and global stock markets rallied sharply after China cut interest rates. EURUSD saw weakness on speculation the ECB may expand stimulus measures after ECB Vice President Constancio said medium-term inflation risks in the Eurozone are "very low" and the ECB may respond to any material change to the outlook for price stability.
Oct crude oil (CLV15 +0.46%) this morning is up +13 cents (+0.33%) and Oct gasoline (RBV15 -1.93%) is down -0.0295 (-2.28%). Tuesday's closes: CLV5 +1.07 (+2.80%), RBV5 -0.0103 (-0.79%). Oct crude and gasoline on Tuesday settled mixed. Crude oil prices received a boost from the Chinese rate cut, which may help revive China's economic growth and energy demand, and from the larger-than-expected jump in U.S. Aug consumer confidence to a 7-month high. Negative factors included a stronger dollar, weakness in gasoline after BP restarted its 235,000 bpd refinery in Whiting, IN, and expectations that Wednesday's EIA crude inventories report will show an increase of +2.0 million bbl.

BioTelemetry - Chart of the Day

BioTelemetry (BEAT) formerly Cardionet is the Barchart Chart of the Day.  The medical services company has a Trend Spotter buy signal, a Weighted Alpha of 106.10+ and gained 101.40% in the last year.

The Chart of the Day belongs to BioTelemetry (BEAT) formerly known as Cardionet.  I found the medical services stock by sorting the Russell 3000 Index stocks first for the highest Weighted Alpha then for Barchart technical buy signals of 80% of better.  Since the Trend Spotter signaled a buy on 7/9 the stock gained 42.30%.

BioTelemetry, Inc. provides ambulatory outpatient management solutions for monitoring clinical information regarding an individual's health. It is focused on the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiac arrhythmias, or heart rhythm disorders. BioTelemetry, Inc., formerly known as CardioNet, Inc., is headquartered in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

The status of Barchart's Opinion trading systems are listed below.  Please note that the Barchart Opinion indicators are updated live during the session every 10 minutes and can therefore change during the day as the market fluctuates.  The indicator numbers shown below therefore may not match what you see live on the Barchart.com web site when you read this report.

Barchart technical indicators:

  • 100% Barchart technical buy signals
  • 106.10+ Weighted Alpha
  • Trend Spotter buy signal
  • Above its 20, 50 and 100 day moving averages
  • 10 new highs and up 29.67% in the last month
  • Relative Strength Index 76.27
  • Barchart computes a technical support level at 11.54
  • Recently traded at 14.42 with a 50 day moving average of 11.10
Fundamental factors:
  • Market Cap $389.52 million
  • P/E 47.21
  • Revenue expected to grow 9.30% this year and another 10.40% next year
  • Earnings estimated to increase 310.00% this year, and an additional 34.10% next year
  • Wall Street analysts issued 3 strong buy and 1 buy recommendation on the stock.
The 100 day moving average vs price has been the most effective technical trading strategy for this stock but has also resulted in an excessive number of traded.  A moving stop loss 20% below the most recent high might work out better for most investors.

PLEASE NOTE:  The Chart of the Day is not a buy recommendation.  Even when the market is in turmoil if you screen 3000 stocks for positive momentum attributes you will always come up with a few stocks that fight even the most negative market momentum.
