Yahoo rose 1.4% in pre-market trading after the company sold shares of Alibaba for $68 as Alibaba Group raised $21.8 billion in the biggest ever U.S. initial public offering. Asian stocks closed mostly higher: Japan +1.58%, Hong Kong +0.57%, China +0.69%, Taiwan +0.04%, Australia +0.32%, Singapore +0.24%, South Korea +0.23%, India -0.08%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Index soared to a 6-3/4 year high as exporters rallied after the yen tumbled to a fresh 6-year low against the dollar. Commodity prices are mixed. Oct crude oil (CLV14 -0.41%) is down -0.12%. Oct gasoline (RBV14 +0.02%) is up +0.29%. Dec gold (GCZ14 -0.29%) is down -0.36%. Dec copper (HGZ14 -0.06%) is up +0.08%. Japan Aug nationwide department store sales fell -0.3% y/y, the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines.
The Japan Jul all-industry activity index unexpectedly fell for a second month as it declined -0.2% m/m, weaker than expectations of unch m/m.
The Japan Jul leading index CI was revised down to 105.4 from the originally reported 106.5. The Jul coincident index was left unchanged at 109.9.

Dec E-mini S&Ps (ESZ14 +0.24%) this morning are up +6.50 points (+0.32%) at a record high. The S&P 500 index on Thursday climbed to a new record high and closed higher: S&P 500 +0.49%, Dow Jones +0.64%, Nasdaq +0.72%. Bullish factors included (1) carry-over optimism from Wednesday that the Fed will be in no hurry to raise interest rates after it retained its “considerable time” interest rate guidance, and (2) the -36,000 decline in weekly initial unemployment claims to 280,000, a larger drop than expectations of -10,000 to 305,000. A bearish factor was the -14.4% decline in Aug housing starts to 956,000, much weaker than expectations of -5.2% to 1.037 million, and the -5.6% drop in Aug building permits to 998,000, weaker than expectations of -1.6% to 1.040 million.

Asian stocks closed mostly higher: Japan +1.13%, Hong Kong -0.85%, China +0.31%, Taiwan +0.46%, Australia +0.16%, Singapore +0.02%, South Korea -0.87%, India +1.81%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Index climbed to an 8-1/4 month high after Japan's trade balance unexpectedly shrunk last month and after exporters rallied when they yen plunged to a 6-year low against the dollar. Commodity prices are mostly lower on dollar strength. Oct crude oil (CLV14 +0.08%) is down -0.14%. Oct gasoline (RBV14 +0.19%) is up +0.04%. Dec gold (GCZ14 -1.05%) is down -0.93% at an 8-1/4 month low on fund selling after the FOMC yesterday increased its estimates for interest rates. Liquidation by funds cut long gold positions in ETF's to 1,706 MT today, the lowest in 4-3/4 years. Dec copper (HGZ14 -0.67%) is down -0.29% on Chinese demand concerns after China's new-home prices fell last month. Agriculture and livestock prices are mostly lower. China Aug new-home prices fell from a month earlier in 68 of 70 cities tracked by the National Bureau of Statistics, the most since Jan 2011 when the government changed the way it compiles the data.
The Japan Aug trade balance unexpectedly shrank to a deficit of -948.5 billion yen, better than expectations of an increase in the deficit to -1.028 trillion yen, Aug exports fell -1.3% y/y, better than expectations of -2.6% y/y. Aug imports fell -1.5% y/y, a bigger decline than expectations of -1.2% y/y.
UK Sep CBI trends total orders fell -15 to -4, a bigger decline than expectations of -2 to 9 and the lowest in a year. The Sep CBI trends selling prices unexpectedly rose +2 to 1, higher than expectations of unch at -1.
UK Aug retail sales ex autos rose +0.2% m/m and +4.5% y/y, less than expectations of +0.3% m/m and +4.8% y/y. Aug retail sales including autos rose +0.4% m/m and +3.9% y/y, slightly less than expectations of +0.4% m/m and +4.0% y/y.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
The market is looking for today’s weekly initial unemployment claims report to show a -10,000 decline to 305,000, reversing nearly all of last week’s rise of +11,000 to 315,000. Meanwhile, the market is expecting today’s continuing claims report to show a -21,000 decline to 2.466 million, more than reversing last week’s increase of +9,000 to 2.487 million. The market is expecting today’s Aug housing starts report to show a decline of -5.2% to 1.037 million, giving back about one-third of July’s surge of +15.7% to 1.093 million. The market is expecting today’s Sep Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index to show a decline of -5.0 to 23.0, more than reversing the +4.1 point increase to 28.0 seen in August. Another positive for European stocks was the larger-than-expected drop in the UK unemployment rate to a 6-year low of 6.2%. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan -0.14%, Hong Kong +1.00%, China +0.53%, Taiwan +0.68%, Australia -0.70%, Singapore +0.73%, South Korea +0.98%, India +0.52%. China's Shanghai Stock Index recovered from a 1-1/2 week low and closed higher as bank stocks rallied after an unnamed official said that the PBOC will provide a liquidity infusion and funnel 100 billion yuan into each of China's five biggest banks for a 3-month period. Commodity prices are mixed. Oct crude oil (CLV14 -0.38%) is down -0.08%. Oct gasoline (RBV14 +0.19%) is up +0.30%. Dec gold (GCZ14 +0.06%) is up +0.10%. Dec copper (HGZ14 -0.71%) is down -0.54%. Agriculture and livestock prices are mixed. The dollar index (DXY00 +0.02%) is up +0.02%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.06%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.19%. UK Aug jobless claims fell -37,200, a larger decrease than expectations of -30,000. The Aug claimant count rate fell -0.1 to 2.9%, right on expectations and the lowest in 6 years.
The UK ILO unemployment rate fell -0.2 to 6.2% in the three months through Jul, a bigger decline than expectations of -0.1 to 6.3% and the lowest in 5-3/4 years.
The Eurozone Aug CPI was revised upward to +0.4% y/y from the originally reported +0.3% y/y. The Aug core CPI was left unrevised at +0.9% y/y.
Eurozone Aug new car registrations rose +2.1% y/y, the twelfth consecutive monthly increase.
Eurozone Jul construction output was unch m/m and up +0.4% y/y, an improvement from Jun which was down -0.4% m/m and -1.1% y/y.
