MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -0.71%) this morning are down -17.25 points (-0.83%) at a 4-week low. Tuesday's closes: S&P 500 -0.96%, Dow Jones -1.21%, Nasdaq -1.29%. The S&P 500 on Tuesday closed lower on weakness in Chinese exporters after the PBOC unexpectedly devalued the yuan. Stocks also saw weakness in commodity producers as crude oil fell to a 4-3/4 month low, and on concern about U.S. consumer demand after June wholesale inventories rose by +0.9% m/m, the biggest increase in 14 months.
Sep 10-year T-note prices (ZNU15 +0.18%) this morning are up +10.5 ticks at a new 3-1/4 month high. Tuesday's closes: TYU5 +27.0, FVU5 +15.00. Sep T-notes Tuesday rallied sharply to a 3-1/4 month nearest-futures high on talk that the Chinese economy may be even weaker than the market thinks after the Chinese central bank devalued the yuan by 1.9%. T-notes also received a boost on the decline in the 10-year T-note breakeven inflation rate to a 4-3/4 month low, and increased safe-haven demand for T-notes after stocks fell.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.90%) this morning is down -0.835 (-0.86%) at a 1-week low. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0099 (+0.90%) at a 4-week high. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.80 (-0.64%). Tuesday's closes: Dollar Index +0.131 (+0.13%), EUR/USD +0.00227 (+0.21%), USD/JPY +0.495 (+0.40%). The dollar index on Tuesday fell to a 1-week low but rebounded and closed slightly higher. The dollar found strength on the Chinese central bank's -1.9% devaluation of the yuan, which dragged other Asian currencies lower and boosted the dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar was undercut by euro strength after Greece reached an accord with creditors on the terms for a third bailout.
Sep crude oil (CLU15 +0.81%) this morning is up +70 cents (+1.62%) and Sep gasoline (RBU15 +1.34%) is up +0.0299 (+1.77%). Tuesday's closes: CLU5 -1.58 (-3.51%), RBU5 +0.0035 (+0.21%). Sep crude oil and gasoline settled mixed on Tuesday with Sep crude at a 4-3/4 month low. Crude oil closed lower on Chinese demand concerns after China devalued the yuan, which fueled concern that Chinese demand for foreign crude may fall as the weaker yuan boosts import costs. Crude oil prices also fell on OPEC data showing that Iran's July oil production rose +32,300 bpd to 2.86 million bpd, a 3-year high. Gasoline closed higher on production concerns after British Petroleum said its Whiting, Indiana refinery will be at reduced output for a month due to unplanned maintenance and Phillips 66 said its Bayway, New Jersey refinery will shut gasoline production for up to two weeks.
