MARKET COMMENTS
Dec E-mini S&Ps (ESZ16 +0.03%) this morning are up +1.00 point (+0.05%). Monday's closes: S&P 500 +0.58%, Dow Jones +0.24%, Nasdaq +0.82%. The S&P 500 on Monday closed higher on carry-over support from a rally in European stocks to a 3-week high on reduced concern about contagion of political risks from Italy to Europe. U.S. stocks were also boosted by signs of U.S. economic strength after the Nov ISM non-manufacturing index rose +2.4 to 57.2, stronger than expectations of +0.7 to 55.5 and the fastest pace of expansion in 13 months. Energy producer stocks received a boost as the price of crude oil rose to a 16-1/2 month high.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH17 unch) this morning are down -1 tick. Monday's closes: TYH7 unch, FVH7 -3.00. Mar 10-year T-note futures on Monday closed little changed. T-note prices were undercut by reduced safe-haven demand after the failure of the Italian constitutional reform referendum didn't cause much consternation and after U.S. stocks rallied. T-note prices were also undercut by the larger-than-expected increase in the Nov ISM non-manufacturing index to its fastest pace of expansion in 13 months (+2.4 to 57.2). T-notes found some support after St. Louis Fed President Bullard said a single 25 bp increase in the fed funds rate "will get us very close" to the interest rate path recommended by the St. Louis Fed through 2019.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.19%) this morning is up +0.190 (+0.19%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0026 (-0.24%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.12 (+0.11%). Monday's closes: Dollar index -0.680 (-0.67%), EUR/USD +0.0100 (+0.94%), USD/JPY +0.34 (+0.30%). The dollar index on Monday closed lower on reduced safe-haven demand for the dollar after stocks recovered losses and moved higher as a 'No' vote for Italy's constitutional reforms was already factored into the market. EUR/USD rebounded from a 1-1/2 year low and rallied to a 2-week high on signs of economic strength in the Eurozone that may keep the ECB from expanding stimulus after Eurozone Oct retail sales rose +1.1% m/m, the biggest monthly increase in 2 years.
Jan WTI crude oil prices (CLF17 -1.08%) this morning are down -44 cents (-0.85%) and Jan gasoline (RBF17 -0.25%) is +0.0008 (+0.05%) . Monday's closes: Jan crude +0.11 (+0.20%), Jan gasoline -0.0101 (-0.65%). Jan crude oil and gasoline on Monday settled mixed with Jan crude at a 16-1/2 month high. Crude oil prices were boosted by the slide in the dollar index to a 2-week low and by continued support from last Wednesday's OPEC production cut agreement. Crude oil prices were undercut by news of a +200,000 bpd increase in OPEC Nov crude production to a record 34.160 million bpd.

MORNING CALL 5/9

MORNING CALL

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
Jun E-mini S&Ps (ESM16 +0.29%) are up +0.24% and European stocks are up +1.48% as a +2.15% rally in crude oil (CLM16 +1.34%) boosts energy producing stocks. The ongoing wildfire in Alberta, Canada has cut Canadian oil production by about 1 million bpd and has underpinned oil prices. Another positive for European stocks was the bigger-than-expected increase in Eurozone May Sentix investor confidence. On the negative side, however, copper prices (HGN16 -1.51%) dropped -1.53% to a 3-1/2 week low which has undercut mining stocks with Rio Tinto Group and Glencore Plc both down at last 3%. In addition, China Apr exports unexpectedly fell and China Apr imports fell for the 18th month in a row. Asian stocks settled mixed: Japan +0.68%, Hong Kong +0.23%, China -2.79%, Taiwan -0.18%, Australia +0.54%, Singapore +1.29%, South Korea -0.44%, India +1.82%. Chinese stocks were pressured by the weak Chinese trade data as the Shanghai Composite fell to a 1-3/4 month low, while Japanese stocks finished higher as exporters rallied after USD/JPY climbed to a 1-week high, which improves the earnings prospects of exporter companies.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.19%) is up +0.13% at a 1-week high. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.13% at a 1-week low. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.88% at a 1-week high.
Jun T-note prices (ZNM16 +0.12%) are up +1.5 ticks.
Speaking at the International Financial Services Forum in London, Chicago Fed President Evans said that U.S. economic fundamentals are "good" and "wait and see" stance for monetary policy is appropriate. He said the U.S. economy should grow at a 2.5% pace for the rest of 2016, which "should support a gradual resumption of U.S. policy rate increases later this year."
New York Fed President Dudley said that while Friday's U.S. employment report was "a touch softer," it won't affect his economic outlook and that it remains a "reasonable expectation" that the Fed will raise interest rates twice this year.
The Eurozone May Sentix investor confidence rose +0.5 to 6.2, stronger than expectations of +0.3 to 6.0.
The China Apr trade balance widened to a surplus of +$45.56 billion, bigger than expectations of +$40.00 billion. Apr exports unexpectedly fell -1.8%y/y weaker than expectations of no change, and Apr imports fell -10.9% y/y, weaker than expectations of -4.0% y/y.

In addition, EUR/USD saw weakness after the German Sep ZEW survey expectations of economic growth fell more than expected to a 10-month low.
Oct crude oil (CLV15 +1.35%) this morning is up +76 cents (+1.70%) and Oct gasoline (RBV15 +1.02%) is up +0.0206 (+1.55%). Tuesday's closes: CLV5 +0.59 (+1.34%), RBV5 +0.0336 (+2.58%). Oct crude oil and gasoline on Tuesday closed higher on (1) expectations that Wednesday’s weekly EIA data will show crude supplies at Cushing, OK, delivery point of WTI futures, fell -1.0 million bbl, and (2) the plan by the House of Representatives to vote in the coming weeks on ending the 40-year-old ban on U.S. crude exports.

MARKET COMMENTS
Sep 10-year T-note prices are down -8 ticks on reduced safe-haven demand and caution ahead of this today's U.S. GDP report. Wednesday's closes: TYU5 -6, FVU5 -2.75. Sep 10-year T-notes on Wednesday closed mildly lower on reduced safe-haven demand as Chinese and U.S. stocks rallied and on supply overhang as the Treasury sells $105 billion of T-notes this week. T-notes found support, however, on the weak pending home sales report and relief the FOMC did not move to a more hawkish post-meeting statement.
The dollar index this morning is up +0.341 (+0.35%) while EUR/USD is down -0.0022 (-0.20%) and USD/JPY is +0.40% (+0.32%). The dollar index is seeing some continued strength today on expectations for a decent U.S. GDP report and yesterday's slightly more hawkish FOMC post-meeting statement. Wednesday's closes: Dollar Index +0.20 (+0.21%), EUR/USD -0.0076 (-0.69%), USD/JPY +0.38 (+0.31%). The dollar index on Wednesday closed mildly higher on technical buying and the rally in Chinese and U.S. stocks. However, the dollar was undercut by the weak U.S. pending home sales report and the dovish FOMC post-meeting statement, which suggested that the Fed is in no hurry to raise interest rates.
Sep crude oil this morning is up +0.45 (+0.92%) and Sep gasoline is up +0.0357 (+2.03%) on carry-over support from yesterday's EIA report that featured a -4.2 million bbl drop in U.S. crude oil inventories and a -1.5% drop in U.S. oil production. Wednesday's closes: CLU5 +0.81 (+1.69%), RBU5 +0.0066 (+0.38%). Sep crude oil and gasoline on Wednesday closed higher on the rally in Chinese stocks and EIA's report of a -4.2 million bbl decline in U.S. crude oil inventories versus expectations for a +850,000 bbl build. Crude oil prices were also boosted by the EIA report's -1.5% drop in U.S. oil production in the week ended July 24 to 9.413 million bpd, which is down by -2.0% the 43-year high of 9.610 million bpd posted in the first week of June.
