MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH16 +0.75%) this morning are up +6.25 points (+0.32%). Thursday's closes: S&P 500 -2.37%, Dow Jones -2.32%, Nasdaq -3.11%. The S&P 500 on Thursday sank to a 3-month low and closed sharply lower on carry-over weakness from the -7% plunge in the Chinese stock market, the Chinese government's eighth day of devaluing the yuan, and weakness in energy and raw-material producers after crude oil fell to a 12-year low and copper slumped to a 6-1/2 year low. Stocks recovered from their worst levels on speculation Chinese markets may stabilize after China's regulator suspended circuit breakers that had halted stock trading in China twice this week once losses reached 7%.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH16 -0.17%)this morning are down -6 ticks. Thursday's closes: TYH6 +8.00, FVH6 +6.75. Mar-T-notes on Thursday climbed to a 2-month high on (1) increased safe-haven demand with the sharp sell-off in global equity markets, and (2) speculation that the financial turmoil in China will delay the Fed's next rate hike. T-notes fell back from their best levels as stocks recovered from their lows on speculation Chinese stock markets may stabilize after China's regulator suspended a circuit breaker that had halted stock trading twice this week.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.54%) this morning is up +0.494 (+0.50%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0061 (-0.56%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.62 (+0.53%). Thursday's closes: Dollar Index -0.962 (-0.97%), EUR/USD +0.0151 (+1.40%), USD/JPY -0.80 (-0.68%). The dollar index on Thursday closed lower on speculation that this week's sell-off in global equity markets may prompt the Fed to delay the next interest rate increase. In addition, USD/JPY fell to a 4-1/2 month low as the sell-off in global equity markets boosted the safe-haven demand for the yen.
Feb crude oil (CLG16 +0.72%) this morning is down -9 cents (-0.27%) and Feb gasoline (RBG16 +0.35%) is down -0.0067 (-0.58%). Thursday's closes: CLG6 -0.71 (-2.09%), RBG6 -0.0122 (-1.05%). Feb crude oil and gasoline on Thursday closed lower with Feb crude at a 12-year nearest-futures low and Feb gasoline at a 6-3/4 year low. Energy prices were undercut by the slump in global stock markets and by negative carryover from Wednesday’s EIA inventory report that showed a +917,000 bbl increase in crude supplies at Cushing to a record high of 63.91 million bbl and a +10.58 million bbl surge in weekly EIA gasoline inventories to a 9-1/2 month high. Prices recovered from their worst levels on as the dollar moved lower.

BARCHART MORING CALL 7/31

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -0.20%) this morning are trading slightly lower by -2.50 points (-0.12%) on negative carry-over from this morning's slightly lower trade in European stocks with the EuroStoxx 50 index down -0.08%. In addition, the Shanghai Composite index today closed -1.13% and lower commodity prices are hurting commodity producer stocks. The markets remain worried about China and a Fed rate hike later this year. On the more positive side, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index is up +0.3% this morning.
Asian stocks today closed mostly higher: Japan +0.30%, Hong Kong +0.56%, China -1.13%, Taiwan +0.16%, Australia +0.52%, Singapore -1.45%, South Korea +0.28%, India +1.48%, Turkey +0.92%.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.21%) this morning is down -0.291 (-0.30%) while EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0041 (+0.38%) and USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.13 (+0.10%). Sep 10-year T-note prices (ZNU15 -0.05%) this morning are down -2.5 ticks since global stocks are generally stable this morning.
Commodity prices this morning are down by -0.33% on average. Sep crude oil (CLU15 -1.77%) this morning is down -0.91 (-1.88%) and Sep gasoline (RBU15 +0.06%) is down -0.0027 (-0.15%) as bearish sentiment prevails. Metals prices this morning are trading lower with Aug gold (GCQ15 -0.74%) down -8.5 (-0.78%), Sep silver (SIU15 -1.16%) down -0.161 (-1.10%), and Sep copper (HGU15 -0.63%) down -0.016 (-0.65%). Grains are steady to higher. Softs are mixed.
The Russian central bank today cut its key rate by 50 bp to 11.0%, in line with most market forecasts. Today's rate cut was the fifth this year. The Russian bank was able to slowly cut the rate this year, which was raised sharply late last year to as high as 17% when U.S. and European sanctions over Ukraine caused the ruble to plunge. The market consensus is that the Russian economy this year will fall by -3.5% but then recover to +0.5% in 2016 and +1.3% in 2017.
Greek Prime Minister Tsipras managed to delay a Syriza party congress until September, which should come after his government signs off on a 3-year bailout program some time in August. Members in his Syriza party who are opposed to the bailout had hoped to hold a party congress as early as this weekend, which could have led to a split in the party and could have forced new elections. The outcome is favorable for the markets since it suggests that Ms. Tsipras should be able to push the 3-year bailout through the Greek parliament before new elections are held, likely this autumn.

Thursday's closes: S&P 500 unchanged, Dow Jones -0.03%, Nasdaq +0.33%. The S&P 500 on Thursday closed little changed, finding support from general optimism about Q2 earnings as about three-quarters of reporting SPX companies have surprised to the upside, and from relief that the Chinese stock market appears to be holding and has not fallen below Monday’s lows. However, factors causing downward pressure yesterday included the slightly weaker-than-expected U.S. Q2 GDP report of +2.3% (vs expectations of +2.5%) and a -4% decline in Procter & Gamble and -1.8% decline in Facebook on negative earnings news.

MARKET COMMENTS

Sep 10-year T-notes on Thursday closed slightly higher on the sluggish stock market and on the slightly weaker-than-expected Q2 GDP report of +2.3%, which did not create any fresh pressure on the Fed to begin its rate-hike regime. T-notes continued to see some downward pressure from supply overhang as the Treasury sold 7-year T-notes to conclude this week’s $105 billion T-note package.
The dollar index this morning is down -0.291 (-0.30%) while EUR/USD is up +0.0041 (+0.38%) and USD/JPY is up +0.13 (+0.10%). Thursday's closes: Dollar Index +0.58 (+0.60%), EUR/USD -0.0052 (-0.47%), USD/JPY +0.20 (+0.16%). The dollar index on Thursday closed moderately higher on technical buying, continued ideas that the Fed will tighten by year-end, and weakness in EUR/USD as the IMF said it will not join a Greek bailout unless the Eurozone provides debt relief and assurance of long-term debt sustainability.

BARCHART MORNING CALL 7/7

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 -0.10%) are up +0.25%, although European stocks are down -0.57% at a fresh 4-3/4 month low as European leaders prepare to meet to discuss Greece's economic crisis. The ECB maintained the level of Emergency Liquidity Assistance to Greek banks at 88.6 billion euros on Monday, while tightening terms related to collateral as it raised the haircut on Greek debt to 45%. Greek banks and its stock market will remain shut through Wednesday. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan +1.31%, Hong Kong -1.03%, China -1.29%, Taiwan -0.06%, Australia +1.94%, Singapore +0.24%, South Korea -0.10%, India -0.13%. The sell-off in Chinese stocks continued for the fourth time in five days as the Shanghai Composite fell to a 3-1/2 month low. Deleveraging of stocks purchased on margin has fueled declines as traders cut 93.6 billion yuan worth of stock bought on margin on the Shanghai Stock exchange since Monday, the most since at least 2010. Also, foreign investors are exiting Chinese stocks at a record pace as net selling through the Hong Kong-Shanghai exchange link reached 10.3 billion yuan today, extending sales to 23.7 billion yuan in the past 2 days, the most since the link started in November.
Commodity prices are mixed. Aug crude oil (CLQ15 -0.70%) is up +0.78%, Aug gasoline (RBQ15 -0.24%) is up +0.95%. Metals prices are weaker. Aug gold (GCQ15 -0.17%) is down -0.72%. Sep copper (HGU15 -1.98%) is down -2.44% at a new 5-month low. Agricultural prices are lower.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.57%) is up +0.54% at a 1-month high. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.77% at a 1-week low. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.06%.

Sep T-note prices (ZNU15 +0.39%) are up +10.5 ticks on carry-over support from a rally in German bunds to a 1-month high.
In a document published on its website today, the ECB added "moral hazard" to its Emergency Liquidity Assistance (ELA) rules in an attempt to clarify the conditions to which banks may access emergency aid. The ECB warned that "moral hazard" could be a reason to object to ELA it allows banks to access saying that "the objective of ELA is to support solvent credit institutions facing temporary liquidity problems. It is not a monetary-policy instrument." The reference to moral hazard indicates the ECB is worried that bending the liquidity rules for Greece may lead future Eurozone members to act less responsibly.

The S&P 500 on Monday closed lower on (1) a slide in European stocks to a 4-3/4 month low as financial stocks plunged on Grexit concerns after Greece voters decisively voted No in Sunday's referendum, (2) the +0.3 point increase in the U.S. Jun ISM non-manufacturing index to 56.0, weaker than expectations of +0.7 to 56.4, and (3) weakness in oil producers on the plunge in oil prices. Stocks recovered from their worst levels after Greek Finance Minster Varoufakis resigned, which raised hopes that Prime Minister Tsipras may be ready to accede to a bailout deal.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU15 +0.39%) this morning are up +10.5 ticks. Monday's closes: TYU5 +28.50, FVU5 +15.25. Sep T-notes on Monday gapped up to a 2-week high and closed higher on (1) Grexit concerns after Sunday's referendum vote, and (2) ideas that the Fed might be forced to delay a rate hike by the Greek crisis. T-notes fell back from their best levels after stocks recovered on speculation the ECB will contain any negative fallout from the Greek crisis.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.57%) this morning is up +0.523 (+0.54%) at a fresh 1-month high. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0085 (-0.77%) at a 1-week low. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.07 (-0.06%). Monday's closes: Dollar Index +0.185 (+0.19%), EUR/USD -0.0028 (-0.25%), USD/JPY -0.486 (-0.39%). The dollar index on Monday climbed to a 1-month high and settled higher on the decline in EUR/USD to a 1-week low on Grexit concerns. However, the rally in the dollar index was curbed by safe-haven demand for the yen and by news that Greek Finance Minster Varoufakis resigned, which means that Prime Minister Tsipras may be ready for a bailout deal.
Aug WTI crude oil (CLQ15 -0.70%) this morning is up +41 cents (+0.78%). Aug gasoline (RBQ15 -0.24%) is up +0.0183 (+0.95%). Monday's closes: CLQ5 -2.99 (-5.39%), RBQ5 -0.0651 (-3.25%). Aug crude oil and gasoline gapped lower Monday and finished sharply lower with Aug crude at a 2-1/2 month low and Aug gasoline at a 1-month low. Negative factors included dollar strength, Grexit concerns, and the possibility of an Iran nuclear deal this week, which would pave the way for at least a doubling of Iranian oil exports.
