Today's 5 Best Mid Caps

As I write this post the Mid Caps although in a downward trend like the rest of the indexes are not the worst index on the block.  When I look at how many stocks are trading above their daily moving averages the S&P 400 Mid Cap Index is just slightly less worse than the rest.

S&P 400 Mid Cap stocks trading above their DMAs:

  • 26.75% above 20 DMA
  • 15.75% above 50 DMA
  • 16.00% above 100 DMA
Stocks trading above their DMAs from the 10,000+ in the Barchart database:
  • 19.93% above 20 DMA
  • 12.90% above 50 DMA
  • 12.77% above 100 DMA
The following chart plots the percentage loss of some of the major indexes over the last year:
  1. Value Line Arithmetic Index down 18.37%
  2. Dow Industrial Index down 10.94
  3. S&P 400 Mid Cap Index down 15.39
  4. Russell 3000 Index down 12.39

Today I used Barchart to sort the S&P 400 Mid Cap Index stocks first for the highest technical buy signals, then I used the Flipchart feature to review the charts.

Today's list includes National Retail Proprieties (NNN), Idacorp (IDA), Dean Foods (DF),  Black Hills (BKH) and Westar Energy (WR).

Today's 5 Best Mid Caps

There seems to be a disconnect between the direction of the economy and the direction of the stock market.   Now I realize that the Conference Boards Leading Economic Indictor include the stock market as one of its components but it is just on of many factors.  The Conference Boards December Economic Indicator Report has the Leading Economic Indicators (LEI) declining slightly by .2% and the Coincedent Economic Indicators (CEI) still rising by .1%.

As I write this article the 10,000+ stocks in the Barchart data base tell a different story.  Less than 50% are trading above their Daily Moving Averages:

  • 28.27% - 20 DMA
  • 16.42% - 50 DMA
  • 18.93% - 100 DMA
In my personal portfolios, I'm conservative and on the side lines till I see the market trading above its Daily Moving Averages

Today's list contains those few stocks trading above their DMA's.  This morning I used Barchart to sort the S&P 400 Mid Cap Stock Index stocks to see which ones had the best technical buy signals and charts.  Today's list includes National Retail Properties (NNN), Atmos Energy (ATO), Aqua Water (WTR), Waste Connections (WCN) and Teleflex (TFX).

BARCHART MORNING CALL 6/24

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU14 -0.18%) this morning are down -0.18% and European stocks are little changed, up +0.01%, after the German Jun IFO business conditions fell more than expected to a 6-month low, a sign that the European economy may be slowing. Losses in European stocks were limited on a possible short-term truce to the hostilities in Ukraine. The ruble strengthened against the dollar and the Russian Micex Stock Index rallied over 1% after pro-Russian forces in Ukraine called for a cease-fire, matching a truce made earlier by Ukraine President Poroshenko. Russian President Putin also asked the Russian house of parliament to cancel approval granted Mar 1 to use force in Ukraine. Asian stocks closed mostly higher: Japan +0.05%, Hong Kong +0.33%, China +0.50%, Taiwan +0.19%, Australia -0.38%, Singapore +0.14%, South Korea +1.16%, India +1.35%. Commodity prices are mixed. Aug crude oil (CLQ14 +0.13%) is up +0.07%. Aug gasoline (RBQ14 +0.14%) is up +0.07%. Aug gold (GCQ14 +0.52%) is up +0.52% at a 2-1/4 month high. July copper (HGN14 +0.03%) is up +0.13%. MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU14 -0.18%) this morning are down -3.50 points (-0.18%). The S&P 500 index on Monday closed little changed as the ongoing crisis in Iraq prompted long liquidation pressure. Losses were muted on bullish factors that included (1) reduced Chinese economic concerns after the Jun China HSBC flash manufacturing PMI rose +1.4 to 50.8, stronger than expectations of +0.3 to 49.7 and the fastest rate of expansion in 7 months, and (2) the +4.9% increase in U.S. May existing home sales to 4.89 million, better than expectations of +1.9% to 4.74 million and the highest level in 7 months. Closes: S&P 500 +0.17%, Dow Jones +0.15%, Nasdaq +0.05%.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU14 +0.14%) this morning are up +6.5 ticks. Sep 10-year T-note futures prices on Monday closed little changed. A supportive factor for T-notes was carry-over support from a rally in German bunds after ECB President Draghi signaled that interest rates will probably remain low for at least another 2-1/2 years when he said “We have prolonged banks’ access to unlimited liquidity up to the end of 2016. That is a signal.” T-notes fell back from their best levels after May existing home sales rose more than expected to the highest level in 7 months. Closes: TYU4 -2.50, FVU4 -1.75.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.06%) this morning is down -0.047 (-0.06%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0015 (+0.11%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.04 (-0.04%). The dollar index on Monday closed lower on carry-over bearish sentiment toward the dollar after Fed Chair Yellen last Wednesday reiterated that the Fed remains committed to low interest rates for a “considerable time.” EUR/USD fell back after ECB President Draghi said that the recovery “is still weak and unevenly distributed across the Eurozone” and that broad-based asset purchases will be “the answer” if the inflation outlook weakens further. Closes: Dollar Index -0.100 (-0.12%), EUR/USD +0.0004 (+0.03%), USD/JPY -0.107 (-0.10%).
Aug WTI crude oil (CLQ14 +0.13%) this morning is up +7 cents (+0.07%). Aug gasoline (RBQ14 +0.14%) is up +0.0022 (+0.07%). Aug crude and gasoline prices on Monday closed lower. The main bearish factor for oil prices was reduced concerns that Iraqi militants will take over the oil-producing regions of Iraq after government forces regained Iraq’s border crossings with Jordan and Syria. Losses were limited on signs of economic strength in China, the world’s second-largest crude oil consumer, after a gauge of Chinese manufacturing activity expanded at the fastest pace in 7 months. Closes: CLQ4 -0.71 (-0.66%) RBQ4 -0.0152 (-0.49%).

Barchart Morning Call 8/3

Barchart Morning Call
Overnight Developments

EUR/USD is up +0.85% and the dollar index is down -0.72% before this morning's U.S. July nonfarm payrolls report. Italian and Spanish government bonds rebounded following Thursday's rout with the 10-year Italian yield down -22 bp to 6.068% and Spain's 10-year yield down -17 bp to 6.91% as it falls back below the critical 7.00% yield level. Commodity prices are mostly higher with crude oil up +1.31% and copper up +0.64%. Agricultural prices are mostly weaker with Dec corn down -0.60% and Nov soybeans down -0.15%. • Asian stocks today closed mostly lower: Japan -1.13%, Hong Kong -0.12%, China +0.81%, Australia -1.13%, South Korea -1.25%, India -0.15%. Chinese stocks finished higher following a cut in transaction fees on share trading after the Asian markets closed yesterday.
  • European and U.S. stocks gained, the EUR/USD rose and Italian and Spanish government bond yields fell after ECB Council member and Bank of Finland President Liikanen said "the euro is irreversible" and the ECB will take control and cool market turmoil once it completes details of a new bond purchasing program. He added that the size of the new program would be "adequate to reach its objective" of lowering Italian and Spanish borrowing costs.
  • German final-July services PMI was unexpectedly revised up by +0.6 to 50.3 from the originally reported 49.7.
  • Euro-Zone final-July composite PMI was unexpectedly revised higher by +0.1 to 46.5 from the originally reported 46.4.
  • Euro-Zone June retail sales unexpectedly rose +0.1 m/m and fell -1.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of -0.1% m/m and -1.9% y/y.

  • China's July non-manufacturing PMI fell -1.1 to 55.6.
  • In a quarterly report released today, the PBOC said it will keep pursuing a "prudent" monetary policy and that it will conduct "policy fine-tuning" at an appropriate time and consumer inflation may rebound after August, which suggests the PBOC may be slow to ease policy.
    Market Comments
    • Sep E-mini S&Ps this morning are up +13.00 points (+0.95%) after comments from ECB Council member Liikanen fueled a rally in EUR/USD and helped push down Spanish and Italian government bond yields. The U.S. stock market Thursday tumbled throughout the day and finished lower on concern the European debt crisis will drag on when ECB President Draghi failed to take immediate steps to alleviate the crisis: S&P 500 -0.75%, Dow Jones -0.71%, Nasdaq 100 -0.36%. Other negatives included the rise in 10-year Spanish bond yields above the critical 7.00% yield level and the unexpected decline in June U.S. factory orders.
    • Sep 10-year T-notes this morning are down -9.5 ticks on reduced safe-haven demand as equities rally. Sep 10-year T-note prices on Thursday rallied and settled higher on increased safe-haven demand after global stocks plunged when the ECB failed to take immediate action to support the economy or combat the debt crisis: TYU2 +15, FVU2 +4.7. An unexpected drop in June U.S. factory orders and a surge in Spanish and Italian government bond yields also lent support to Treasuries.
    • The dollar index this morning is weaker with EUR/USD +0.85% and USD/JPY +0.03%. The dollar index on Thursday bounced off of a 4-week low and closed higher as inaction by the ECB on the European debt crisis fueled a sell-off in global stocks and increased the safe-haven demand for the dollar: Dollar index +0.303 (+0.36%), EUR/USD -0.00456 (-0.37%), USD/JPY -0.203 (-0.26%).
    • Sep WTI crude oil prices this morning are up +$1.14 a barrel (+1.31%). Sep gasoline is down -0.0013 (-0.05%) cents per gallon . Crude oil and gasoline prices Thursday settled mixed as refinery outages across the U.S. boosted gasoline on supply concerns while crude closed lower on concern that inaction by the ECB on the European debt crisis will prolong the crisis and weaken energy demand: CLU2 -1.78 (-2.00%), RBU2 +0.0354 (+1.25%). A stronger dollar and an unexpected fall in June U.S. factory orders were additional negatives for crude prices.
