MORNING CALL 2/23

MORNING CALL
OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
March E-mini S&Ps (ESH16 -0.04%) are down -0.13% and European stocks are down -0.47% on Chinese economic concerns after the yuan fell to a 1-week low against the dollar when the PBOC cut its daily reference rate for the yuan by -17 bp, the most in 6 weeks. That also undercut Chinese stock prices and sent commodity prices lower. European stocks were also pressured by a nearly 4% decline in BHP Billiton after the company cut its dividend more than expected, and by a 6% fall in Standard Chartered after it reported 2015 revenue of $15.4 billion, less than expectations of $15.9 billion, and said its loan impairments almost doubled to the highest in its history at $4 billion from $2.1 billion in 2014. Another negative or European stock prices was the larger-than-expected decline in German Fed IFO business sentiment to the lowest in 14 months. Asian stocks settled mostly lower: Japan -0.37%, Hong Kong -0.25%, China -0.81%, Taiwan +0.10%, Australia -0.43%, Singapore +0.43%, South Korea +0.03%, India -1.59%.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.09%) is up +0.13%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.32% at a 2-1/2 week low after the bigger-than-expected decline in the German Feb IFO business sentiment bolsters speculation the ECB will expand stimulus measures when it meets next month. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down-0.74% at a 1-week low as the weakness in global equity markets boosts the safe-haven demand for the yen.
Mar T-note prices (ZNH16 -0.10%) are down -3.5 ticks.
The German Feb IFO business climate fell -1.6 to 105.7, weaker than expectations of -0.5 to 106.8 and the lowest in 14 months.

The S&P 500 on Monday climbed to a 3-week high and settled higher on carryover support from a +2.35% rally in the Shanghai Composite to a 4-week high, the 5% surge in crude oil prices, which boosted energy producers and energy service stocks, and strength in mining and raw-material producing stocks after copper prices climbed to a 2-week high.

Monday's closes: TYH6 -4.00, FVH6 -3.25. Mar T-notes on Monday closed lower on reduced safe-haven demand after the S&P 500 rallied to a 3-week high and on supply pressures as the Treasury auctions $101 billion of T-notes this week starting with Tuesday's auction of $26 billion in 2-year T-notes.

The dollar index on Monday rallied to a 2-week high and closed higher on (1) the plunge in GBP/USD to a 6-3/4 year low after a split in the UK's ruling party over European Union membership increases the chance that the UK leaves the EU in a June referendum, and (2) weakness in EUR/USD which fell to a 2-week low after weaker-than-expected Eurozone PMI data increases the chance for expanded ECB stimulus.
Apr WTI crude (CLJ16 +0.12%) this morning is down -13 cents (-0.39%) and Apr gasoline (RBJ16 +0.59%) is up +0.0007 (+0.06%). Monday's closes: CLJ6 +1.64 (+5.17%), RBJ6 +0.0451 (+3.74%). Stocks had traded lower early after the U.S. Sep University of Michigan consumer sentiment fell to a 1-year low (-6.2 to 85.7 vs. expectations of -0.8 to 91.1) and after energy producers sold off as crude oil declined.
Dec 10-year T-notes (ZNZ15 +0.02%) this morning are down -1 tick. Friday's closes: TYZ5 +12.00, FVZ5 +7.50. Dec T-notes Friday closed higher on carryover support from a rally in German bunds after ECB Executive Board member Coeure said that ECB asset purchases will continue for "as long as necessary." Another supportive factor for T-notes was the larger-than-expected drop in U.S. Sep University of Michigan consumer sentiment to a 1-year low, which may prompt the Fed to delay a rate hike.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.05%) this morning is up +0.045 (+0.05%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0021 (-0.19%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down-0.32 (-0.27%). Friday's closes: Dollar Index -0.262 (-0.27%), EUR/USD +0.00567 (+0.50%), USD/JPY -0.03 (-0.02%). The dollar index Friday dropped to a 1-week low on concern that consumer spending may slow and undercut economic growth after the U.S. Sep University of Michigan consumer sentiment fell to a 1-year low. The dollar also fell on speculation the recent volatility in global financial markets that may prompt the Fed to delay an interest rate increase.
Oct crude oil (CLV15 -0.22%) this morning is down -10 cents (-0.22%) and Oct gasoline (RBV15 -0.50%) is down -0.0063 (-0.46%). Friday's closes: CLV5-1.29 (-2.81%), RBV5 -0.0237 (-1.70%). Oct crude oil and gasoline on Friday closed lower with Oct gasoline at a 1-1/2 week low on concern that the U.S. crude oil supply glut will persist with U.S. oil inventories nearly 100 million bbl above their 5-year seasonal average. Prices remained lower after a report from Goldman Sachs said that the oil market is more oversupplied than expected and that prices may need to fall to near $20 a barrel to clear the oversupply.

MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU15 +1.87%) this morning are up +33.00 points (+1.76%). Tuesday's closes: S&P 500 -1.35%, Dow Jones -1.29%, Nasdaq -0.55%. The S&P 500 rallied sharply early Tuesday but erased the advance and closed lower. Stocks fell on concern that the slowdown in China may be worse than expected and that even Tuesday's Chinese rate cut will not be enough to spur growth. Stocks rallied early Tuesday on China's fifth rate cut in nine months and on the +10.5 point jump in the U.S. Aug consumer confidence (Conference Board) to 101.5, stronger than expectations of +3.5 to 93.4 and the highest in 7 months.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU15 +0.18%) this morning are up +9 ticks. Tuesday's closes: TYU5 -1-4.5/32, FVU5 -17.25. Sep T-notes on Tuesday closed sharply lower on (1) reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes as global stock markets rallied sharply on the Chinese rate cut, and (2) the large-than-expected increase in U.S. Aug consumer confidence to a 7-month high.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.07%) this morning is up +0.020 (+0.02%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0094 (-0.82%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.75 (+0.63%). Tuesday's closes: Dollar Index +1.198 (+1.286%), EUR/USD -0.01019 (-1.02%), USD/JPY +0.432 (+0.36%). The dollar index on Tuesday closed higher on reduced safe-haven demand for the yen as USD/JPY and global stock markets rallied sharply after China cut interest rates. EURUSD saw weakness on speculation the ECB may expand stimulus measures after ECB Vice President Constancio said medium-term inflation risks in the Eurozone are "very low" and the ECB may respond to any material change to the outlook for price stability.
Oct crude oil (CLV15 +0.46%) this morning is up +13 cents (+0.33%) and Oct gasoline (RBV15 -1.93%) is down -0.0295 (-2.28%). Tuesday's closes: CLV5 +1.07 (+2.80%), RBV5 -0.0103 (-0.79%). Oct crude and gasoline on Tuesday settled mixed. Crude oil prices received a boost from the Chinese rate cut, which may help revive China's economic growth and energy demand, and from the larger-than-expected jump in U.S. Aug consumer confidence to a 7-month high. Negative factors included a stronger dollar, weakness in gasoline after BP restarted its 235,000 bpd refinery in Whiting, IN, and expectations that Wednesday's EIA crude inventories report will show an increase of +2.0 million bbl.
