MORNING CALL

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
March E-mini S&Ps (ESH16 -0.08%) are down -0.18% and European stocks are down -0.49% after G-20 finance ministers meeting over the weekend in Shanghai disappointed financial markets by not coming up with coordinated stimulus to support the global economy. Weakness in bank stocks is leading the overall market lower with Goldman Sachs and Bank of America both down at least 1.1% in pre-market trading. Stock prices recovered from their worst levels, however, after China cut its reserve requirement ratio for banks by 50 bp to 17.00% from 17.50%. The dollar index (DXY00 +0.15%) is up +0.17% at a 3-week high. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.41% at a 4-week high after Eurozone CPI unexpectedly fell at the fastest pace in a year, which bolsters the case for the ECB to expand stimulus when it convenes next week. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.95%.

Also, Microsoft is up over 3% in pre-market trading after it reported better-than-expected earnings results after the close of trade yesterday, which gave technology stocks a lift. The BOJ's action to adopt a negative interest rate sent global bond yield tumbling with the 10-year Japanese bond yield down to a record low .090%, the German 10-year bund yield down to a 9-month low 0.334% and the U.S. T-note yield down to a 3-1/2 month low of 1.92%. MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH16 +0.84%) this morning are up +14.25 points (+0.76%). Thursday's closes: S&P 500 +0.55%, Dow Jones +0.79%, Nasdaq +1.39%. The S&P 500 on Thursday closed higher on the rally in crude oil to a 3-week high, which lifted energy producing stocks, and the -16,000 decline in U.S. weekly initial unemployment claims to 278,000, a bigger decline than expectations of -12,000 to 281,000. Stocks were undercut by (1) concern that companies are cutting back on capital investment after U.S. Dec capital goods orders non-defense ex-aircraft fell -4.3%, weaker than expectations of -0.2% and the biggest decline in 10 months, and (2) the +0.1% m/m and +3.1% y/y increase in U.S. Dec pending home sales, weaker than expectations of +0.9% m/m and +4.8% y/y.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH16 +0.39%) this morning are up +19 ticks at a contract high. Thursday's closes: TYH6 +5.50, FVH6 +4.00. Mar T-notes on Thursday closed higher on carryover support from a rally in German bunds to an 8-1/2 month high and on the weaker-than-expected U.S. Dec durable goods orders. T-notes were undercut by reduced safe-haven demand with the rally in stocks and by the rally in crude that boosted inflation expectations after the 10-year T-note breakeven inflation rate rose to a 1-week high.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.59%) this morning is up +0.555 (+0.56%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0018 (-0.16%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +2.08 (+1.75%) at a 5-week high. Thursday's closes: Dollar Index -0.392 (-0.40%), EUR/USD +0.0047 (+0.43%), USD/JPY +0.14 (+0.12%). The dollar index on Thursday dropped to a 2-week low and closed lower on negative carryover from Wednesday's post-FOMC meeting statement that adopted more dovish language and on the weaker-than-expected U.S. Dec durable goods orders report, which adds to evidence of slowing growth that may further delay additional Fed rate hikes.
Mar crude oil (CLH16 +0.93%) this morning is up +7 cents (+0.21%) and Mar gasoline (RBH16 -0.21%) is down -0.0060 (-0.55%). Thursday's closes: CLH6 +1.42 (+4.40%), RBH6 +0.0536 (+5.02%). Mar crude oil and gasoline on Thursday closed sharply higher with Mar crude at a 3-week high and Mar gasoline at a 2-1/2 week high. Crude oil prices were boosted by the fall in the dollar index to a 2-week low and by heavy fund short covering after Russia’s Energy Minister said he may meet with OPEC next month to discuss a potential coordinated cut in crude output.

MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH16 +0.23%) this morning are down -1.50 (-0.08%) points at a 3-1/2 month low. Wednesday's closes: S&P 500 -2.50%, Dow Jones-2.21%, Nasdaq -3.48%. The S&P 500 on Wednesday slumped to a 3-1/4 month low and closed sharply lower on negative carryover from a -2.42% sell-off in the China Shanghai Composite to a 4-1/2 month low and weakness in energy producer stocks after weekly EIA data showed supplies of crude oil and refined products continue to grow. Consumer discretionary stocks were led lower by a 10% plunge in BorgWarner on disappointing 2016 sales guidance.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH16 -0.07%) this morning are up +3.5 ticks. Wednesday's closes: TYH6 +7.50, FVH6 +4.00. Mar T-Notes on Wednesday rose to a 2-1/2 month high and closed higher on the plunge in stocks, which spurred safe-haven demand buying of T-notes, and by dovish comments from Chicago Fed President Evans who said he backs an "even shallower" path for fed funds rate increases than his FOMC colleagues.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.16%) this morning is down -0.281 (-0.28%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0040 (+0.37%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.06 (+0.05%). Wednesday's closes: Dollar Index -0.041 (-0.04%), EUR/USD +0.0019 (+0.17%), USD/JPY +0.03 (+0.03%). The dollar index on Wednesday closed lower on comments from Chicago Fed President Evans who said the cost of raising the fed funds rate too fast "far exceed" costs of removing accommodation too slowly, which signals that he is not in favor of raising interest rates anytime soon. In addition, the Fed Beige Book stated that U.S. wage pressures are subdued and overall prices pressures are minimal, which may cause the Fed to pause on additional interest rate increases.
Feb crude oil (CLG16 +1.38%) this morning is up +26 cents (+0.85%) and Feb gasoline (RBG16 +2.40%) is up +0.0182 (+1.73%). Wednesday's closes: CLG6 +0.04 (+0.13%), RBG6 -0.0320 (-2.95%). Feb crude oil and gasoline prices on Wednesday settled mixed with Feb gasoline at a 6-3/4 year low. Crude oil prices were undercut by the +8.44 million bbl surge in weekly EIA gasoline inventories to a 10-1/2 month high and the +6.14 million bbl increase in EIA distillate stockpiles to a 5-year high of 165.5 million bbl. Crude oil prices founds support on (1) the +234,000 bbl increase in EIA crude inventories, less than expectations of +2.0 million bbl, and (2) strong Chinese demand after Chinese customs data showed China 2015 crude imports rose +8.8% y/y to a record 334 MMT.
