BARCHART MORNING CALL 7/10

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU14 -0.84%) this morning are down -0.95% at a 1-week low and European stocks are down -1.85% at a 1-1/2 month low as European sovereign debt concerns resurfaced after Portuguese bonds tumbled as concern deepened over missed debt payments by a company linked to Banco Espirito Santo, Portugal's second-largest bank. European bank stocks plunged with Banco Espirito Santo down 11% and Espirito Santo Financial Group SA, which owns 25% of the lender, down 9% before trading was halted. The company suspended trading in its stocks and bonds, saying it is "currently assessing the financial impact of its exposure" to Espirito Santo International, which has missed payments on short-term obligations. While Portugal's central bank said Banco Espirito Santo SA is protected after its parent missed debt payments, Moody's Investors Service downgraded a company in the group citing a lack of transparency and links to other companies. Another negative for stocks was the slower-than-expected increase in China Jun exports, which fueled concern that global economic momentum may be slowing. Asian stocks closed mixed: Japan -0.56%, Hong Kong +0.27%, China -0.27%, Taiwan +0.79%, Australia +0.22%, Singapore -0.18%, South Korea +0.12%, India -0.28%. Commodity prices are mixed. Aug crude oil (CLQ14 -0.42%) is down -0.53% and Aug gasoline (RBQ14 +0.06%) is down -0.09%, both at 1-month lows. Aug gold (GCQ14 +1.43%) is up +1.46% at a 3-1/2 month high as a slide in global stocks boosts the safe-haven demand for gold. Sep copper (HGU14 -0.28%) is down -0.28% at a 1-week low on Chinese demand concerns after China Jun exports rose less than expected. Agriculture and livestock prices are mixed with Aug live hog prices down -0.96% at a 2-week low on fund liquidation. The dollar index (DXY00 +0.16%) is up +0.14%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.18%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.33% at a 1-week low as the slide in stocks boosts the safe-haven demand for the yen. Sep T-note prices (ZNU14 +0.33%) are up +12 ticks at a 5-week high and the yield on the 10-year German bund dropped to a 14-month low of 1.171% on increased safe-haven demand amid signs of financial stress in Portugal.
The China Jun trade balance unexpectedly shrank to a +$31.56 billion surplus, narrower than expectations of a +$36.95 billion surplus. Jun exports rose +7.2% y/y, less than expectations of +10.4% y/y, and Jun imports climbed +5.5% y/y, less than expectations of +6.0% y/y.
St. Louis Fed President Bullard said that a rapid drop in unemployment will fuel inflation saying "I think we are going to overshoot here on inflation" as he predicts inflation of 2.4% at the end of next year, "well above" the Fed's 2% target. Bullard, who calls himself the "North Pole of inflation hawks," estimates full employment at about 6% and after U.S. Jun unemployment dropped to 6.1% he said the Fed will need to raise interest rates sooner than estimated.
Japan Jun consumer confidence rose +1.8 to 41.1, better than expectations of +0.7 to 40.0 and the best level in 6 months.
The Japan Jun PPI rose +0.2% m/m and +4.6% y/y, higher than expectations of +0.1% m/m and +4.5% y/y with the +4.6% y/y gain the fastest annual increase in 5-3/4 years.
The Japan May tertiary industry index rose +0.9% m/m, less than expectations of +1.7% m/m.
Japan May machine orders unexpectedly plunged -19.5% m/m, the biggest monthly decline since the data series began in 1987. On an annual basis, May machine orders fell -14.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +10.1% y/y and the largest y/y drop in 4-1/2 years.

Supportive factors included (1) optimism about Q2 earnings as Alcoa rose over 3% after it kicked off Q2 earnings season by reporting better-than-expected Q2 profit and sales, and (2) the Jun 17-18 FOMC meeting minutes that stated that “monetary policy needed to continue to promote the favorable financial conditions required to support the economic expansion.” Closes: S&P 500 +0.46%, Dow Jones +0.47%, Nasdaq +0.75%.

The S&P 500 index on Friday opened lower after July non-farm payrolls rose +162,000, weaker than expectations of +185,000 and the smallest increase in 4 months. Closes: S&P 500 +0.16%, Dow Jones +0.19%, Nasdaq 100 +0.55%.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU13 -0.10%) this morning are down -4.5 ticks. OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
June E-mini S&Ps (ESM13 +0.06%) are mildly higher by +0.23% on hopes for strong U.S. economic reports today and on the fact that the Euro Stoxx 50 index this morning is up by +0.16%. Asian stocks today closed mixed. Japan's Nikkei index closed down -0.60% but the Hong Kong Hang Seng closed +0.27%. China's CSI 300 index closed down -1.46% on a report of tighter bank loans for property developers as the government continues it efforts to cool property prices. Commodity prices are mildly higher by +0.33% this morning. May crude oil (CLK13 +0.45%) is up +0.72%, May gasoline (RBK13 +0.24%) is up +0.43%, April gold (GCJ13 -0.44%) is down -0.42%, May copper (HGK13 +0.36%) is up +0.26%, and agriculture prices are trading mostly higher. The dollar index (DXY00 +0.01%) this morning is little changed while EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.18%. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is up +0.22%. June 10-year T-note futures (ZNM13 -0.06%) prices are down -5.5 ticks on the mildly higher trade in U.S. and European stock indexes.
Cyprus banks are closed today and Wednesday but are currently expected to open on Thursday. When they do open, depositors will be restricted in withdrawing their cash and moving it out of the country to tight capital controls that the Cyprus parliament installed late last week. The capital controls will be lifted slowly to prevent bank runs and the quick exit of capital from the country and may last a matter of months. Eurozone officials and the Cyprus government on Sunday night agreed on a 10 billion euro bailout plan that involves closing Cyprus's second largest bank, splitting the largest Cyprus bank into a good bank and bad bank, and imposing heavy losses on large uninsured depositors and bank bond holders.
Democratic Party leader Pier Luigi Bersani today will meet with deputies of Silvio Berlusconi's People of Liberty party and its partner the Northern League as he tries to form a government without the Five Star Movement party headed by ex-comic Grillo, who refuses to be part of any government with the established parties. More than a month after the Feb 24-25 national election, the Italian political parties are still trying to form a government. A new election may yet be necessary. If Mr. Bersani cannot form a government by Thursday, then Italian President Napolitano will give the opportunity to another party leader.
Japan's Feb corporate service price index rose +0.1% y/y, which was higher than market expectations of unchanged and the Jan report of -0.2% y/y.
Japan's March small business confidence index rose to a new 6-year high of 49.7 from 46.0 in February. Small business confidence has risen sharply since late last year when Prime Minister Abe took over the reins of government with his verbally aggressive plan to boost the economy.
The China Security Journal today reported that many banks have started to reduce loans to property developers, which fueled increased concerns about weaker Chinese construction growth.
U.S. STOCK PREVIEW
There are five U.S. economic reports this morning and the Treasury will also sell $35 billion in 2-year T-notes today. The only earnings report today for the Russell 1000 stocks is SAIC (after-market) with a consensus of 52 cents. Conferences this week are light ahead of the Good Friday holiday: Canada's Energy Technology Blueprint Summit on Tuesday, Photon's 10th Solar Silicon Conference on Tuesday, Bank of America Merrill Lynch New York Auto Summit on Wednesday, CIBC Retail & Consumer Conference on Thursday, and Photon's 8th Solar Electric Utility Conference on Thursday.

June E-mini S&Ps are mildly higher by +3.50 points (+0.23%) on higher European stocks (Euro Stoxx 50 index +0.16%) and on hopes for strong U.S. economic reports this morning. The S&P 500 index on Monday closed mildly lower mainly on technical selling. The stock market was initially encouraged by Sunday night’s Cyprus bailout agreement, but optimism then soured after the Dutch finance minister said that the Cyprus bailout with its heavy losses placed on uninsured depositors should be viewed as a template for bank restructuring in other countries. That raised the spectre of continued bank runs in countries such as Spain and Italy. Closes: S&P 500 -0.33%, Dow Jones -0.44%, Nasdaq 100 -0.41%.
OVERNIGHT U.S. STOCK MOVERS
  • T-Mobile (DTEGY -1.72%) is dropping subsidies for smartphones, according to WSJ, making it the first major U.S. wireless carrier to do so. This may encourage consumers to buy cheaper smartphones than those of Apple (AAPL +0.36%) and Samsung (SSNLF unch).
  • Foster Wheeler (FWLT -0.80%) signed a service agreement with Valero Energy (VLO +0.09%).
  • Children's Place (PLCE +0.99%) reported Q4 adjusted EPS of $1.15, above the consensus of $1.04.
  • Sonic (SONC -1.01%) rallied 4% in after-hours trading on postive earnings.

  • Calumet Specialty Products (CLMT +0.28%) fell 4% in after-hours trading after filing to sell 5.25 million common shares.
MARKET COMMENTS

The dollar index this morning is virtually unchanged while EUR/USD is up +0.0023 (+0.18%). USD/JPY is up +0.21 yen (+0.22%). Closes: Dollar index +0.45 (+0.55%), EUR/USD -0.0136 (-1.05%), USD/JPY -0.29 (-0.31%).
May WTI crude oil this morning is up +0.68 (+0.72%) and May gasoline is up +0.0132 (+0.43%). Gasoline prices lagged on expectations for higher gasoline output in coming weeks. Closes: CLK3 +1.10 (+1.17%), RBK3 +0.0030 (+0.10%).

Barchart Morning Call 11/9

Overnight Developments
  • Dec E-mini S&Ps this morning are down -0.27% as concerns about the U.S. fiscal cliff have caused a global sell-off in stocks. European stocks this morning are down -0.69% and Asian stocks closed lower across the board. Japanese stocks closed down -0.90%, Hong Kong closed down -0.85%, and China closed down -0.20%. Global stocks at least received a little support from slightly stronger-than-expected Chinese economic data. Commodity prices are down by -0.12% this morning with Dec crude oil down -0.45%, Dec gasoline +0.07%, Dec gold +0.26%, Dec copper -1.33% , and agriculture prices trading mostly lower. The USDA in today's WASDE report is expected to make relatively minor changes in its crop estimates. The dollar index is up +0.20% this morning on increased safe-haven demand, while EUR/USD is down -0.21%. Dec 10-year T-notes are up 8 ticks.
  • President Obama today at 1:05 PM is due to make a statement at the White House about the economy and the fiscal outlook. The comments are not likely to be detailed, but the markets will be listening carefully to gauge the extent that President Obama may be willing to compromise on the fiscal cliff and possibly a grand bargain.
  • China's economic data released last night was slightly stronger than expected. The Oct industrial production report of +9.6% y/y was stronger than market expectations of +9.4% and was up from +9.2% in Sep. The Oct retail sales report of +14.5% y/y was slightly stronger than market expectations of +14.4% and was up from +14.2% y/y in Sep. The Oct fixed asset investment (excluding rural) report of +20.7% y/y of +20.7% was stronger than market expectations of +20.6% and was up from +20.5% in Sep. Meanwhile, the Oct CPI rate of +1.7% y/y was weaker than market expectations of +1.9% y/y and Sep's report of +1.9% y/y, which gives the Chinese central bank a little more flexibility on monetary policy to either cut the reserve ratio or interest rates.
  • China's Oct passenger-vehicle wholesale deliveries rose +6.4% to 1.3 million units, which was slightly stronger than market expectations of +1.28 million units and suggested that consumer demand for vehicles is holding up.
  • Japan's Oct consumer confidence report of 39.7 was slightly stronger than market expectations of 39.5, although it was down from Sep's 40.1.
  • The UK Sep visible trade deficit of -8.368 billion pounds was narrower than market expectations of -8.9 bln pounds, which was supportive for the British pound. The Sep non-EU trade deficit of -3.972 billion pounds was narrower than market expectations of -4.6 billion pounds.
  • The Greek parliament on Sunday is expected to approve the 2013, which should satisfy most of the requirements necessary for Greece to receive its 31 billion euro bailout payment. However, Eurozone officials said yesterday that Eurozone approval is not likely to come until later in November when the final troika report is available.
  • French Sep industrial production fell -2.7% m/m, which was a much larger drop than market expectations of -1.0%. Meanwhile, the French central bank said that France may be slipping into a recession.
    Market Comments
    • Dec E-mini S&Ps this morning are down -3.75 points (-0.27%) on continued fiscal cliff concerns and on overhang from the sell-off in European and Asian stocks overnight. U.S. stocks on Thursday closed sharply lower again on bearish factors including (1) concern about the fiscal cliff as the CBO released a report providing even more detail about the highly negative effects if the U.S. goes over the fiscal cliff, (2) concern about the apparent delay in a Greek deal until late November, (3) technical weakness with the new 3-month low in the S&P 500 index, and (4) a sharp 3.6% sell-off in Apple on Thursday. Closes: S&P 500 -1.22%, Dow Jones -0.94%, Nasdaq -1.545%. Weekly initial unemployment claims fell by -8,000 to 355,000 and continuing claims plunged by -136,000 to 3.127 mln on Hurricane Sandy distortions.
    • Dec 10-year T-notes this morning are up 8 ticks on safe-haven demand and worries about the economy. Dec 10-year T-note prices on Thursday continued to rally and posted a new 3-month high on (1) safe-haven demand with the sell-off in stocks, and (2) expectations for weaker economic growth in coming months if the fiscal cliff is not resolved: TYZ2 +9, FVZ2 +2.75. In addition, demand was strong for Thursday's 30-year bond auction with a bid cover ratio of 2.77 that was higher than the 12-auction average of 2.65. In addition, foreign buying was strong with indirect bidders buying 45.4% of the auction, well above the 12-auction average of 33.6%.
    • The dollar index this morning is up +0.17 points (+0.20%) on increased safe-haven demand with the sell-off in global stocks on fiscal cliff concerns. EUR/USD is down -0.0027 (-0.21%) and USD/JPY is down -0.24 (-0.30%). The dollar index closed little changed as safe-haven demand for the dollar was offset by worries about a possible U.S. recession from the fiscal cliff: Dollar index +0.03 (+0.04%), EUR/USD -0.0024 (-0.19%), USD/JPY -0.53 (-0.66%). The dollar index received a little support on the report that the Sep U.S. trade deficit narrowed to -$41.5 bln from a revised -$43.8 bln in August. The ECB at its policy meeting on Thursday left its refinancing rate unchanged at 0.75%, which was fully in line with market expectations. The Bank of England at its policy meeting left the base rate unchanged at 0.50%. The BOE also left its asset purchase plan at 375 billion pounds, which was disappointing to some stock market participants who had been hoping for an extension of the BOE's quantitative easing program, although it was bullish for GBP/USD.
    • Dec WTI crude oil prices this morning are down -0.38 (-0.45%) on the higher dollar and worries about the economy. Dec gasoline is up +0.0017 (+0.07%). Dec crude oil and gasoline prices on Thursday closed moderately higher on some short-covering after Wednesday's extraordinary plunges of more than 4%. However, sentiment remains bearish for crude oil on worries about fuel demand if the economy goes off the fiscal cliff and on talk that the Obama administration may launch an aggressive last-ditch negotiating effort with Iran: CLZ2 +0.65 (+0.77%), RBZ2 +0.0184 (+0.71%).
