MARKET COMMENTS
Dec S&P 500 E-mini stock futures (ESZ17 -0.12%) this morning are down -1.50 points (-0.06%). Tuesday's closes: S&P 500 +0.23%, Dow Jones +0.31%, Nasdaq +0.08%. The S&P 500 on Tuesday posted a new record high and closed higher on strength in consumer stocks led by a +4% jump in Wal-Mart to a 2-1/2 year high and a rally in energy stocks after crude oil prices climbed +2.70%. There was also a rally in airline stocks after American Airlines raised its Q3 revenue forecast and United Continental Airlines predicted bigger profit margins. Stocks were also boosted by the IMF's hike in its global 2017 GDP forecast to 3.6% from a Jul estimate of 3.5%.
Dec 10-year T-note prices (ZNZ17 -0.07%) this morning are down -2.5 ticks. Tuesday's closes: TYZ7 +5.50, FVZ7 +2.50. The dollar index on Tuesday fell to a 1-week low and closed lower on concern that President Trump's feud with Republican Senator Corker may unravel Republican support for his tax overhaul plan. The dollar was also undercut by the drop in the 10-year T-note yield, which hurt the dollar's interest rate differentials.
Nov crude oil (CLX17 +0.71%) this morning is up +39 cents (+0.77%) at a 1-week high and Nov gasoline (RBX17 +1.34%) is +0.0086 (+0.54%). Copper was supported by tighter copper supplies after LME copper inventories fell -1,125 MT to a 3-week low of 289,875 MT.

Barchart Morning Call

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH17 +0.02%) are little changed, up +0.02%, and European stocks are down -0.04% at a 1-week low. Strength in energy producers is lifting U.S. stock indexes with Feb WTI crude oil (CLG17 +0.25%) up +0.29% amid further announcements from OPEC members that they are adhering to agree upon production cuts. Rising producer prices in China have spurred inflation concerns in China after China Dec PPI rose +5.5% y/y, the largest increase in 5-1/4 years. The slump in the Chinese yuan to an 8-1/2 year low against the dollar last month has boosted imported commodity prices and increased Chinese factory-gate prices. Asian stocks settled mixed: Japan -0.79%, Hong Kong +0.83%, China -0.30%, Taiwan +0.08%, Australia -0.80%, Singapore +0.82%, South Korea unchanged, India +0.65%.

Mar 10-year T-note prices (ZNH17 +0.01%) are down -0.5 of a tick.
China Dec CPI rose +2.1% y/y, weaker than expectations of +2.2% y/y. Dec PPI rose +5.5% y/y stronger than expectations of +4.6% y/y and the biggest increase in 5-1/4 years.

MARKET COMMENTS
Mar E-mini S&Ps (ESH17 +0.02%) this morning are up +0.50 of a point (+0.02%). Monday's closes: S&P 500 -0.35%, Dow Jones -0.38%, Nasdaq +0.36%. The S&P 500 on Monday closed lower on weakness in oil companies on the -4.07% decline in Feb WTI crude oil to a 3-week low and on heightened geopolitical concerns after a U.S. destroyer fired warning shots at four Iranian vessels that had moved too close in the Strait of Hormuz. Stocks received a boost from news that Nov consumer credit rose +$24.532 billion, stronger than expectations of +$18.4 billion, which shows confidence in the economic outlook as consumers are willing to take on more debt.
Mar 10-year T-notes (ZNH17 +0.01%) this morning are down -0.5 of a tick. Monday's closes: TYH7 +3.00, FVH7 +12.00. Mar 10-year T-notes on Monday closed higher on increased safe-haven demand with the weakness in stocks and on the -4.07% slide in crude oil prices to a 3-week low, which undercut inflation expectations.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.04%) this morning is up +0.01 (+0.01%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is unchanged. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.08 (-0.07%). Monday's closes: Dollar index -0.390 (-0.38%), EUR/USD +0.0042 (+0.40%), USD/JPY -0.99 (-0.85%). The dollar index on Monday closed lower on strength in EUR/USD after the Eurozone Jan Sentix investor confidence rose +8.2 to a 17-month high of 18.2 and on the decline in the 10-year T-note yield, which reduced the dollar's interest rate differentials.
Feb WTI crude oil prices (CLG17 +0.25%) this morning are up +15 cents (+0.29%) and Feb gasoline (RBG17 +0.71%) is +0.0122 (+0.78%). Monday's closes: Feb crude -2.20 (-4.07%), Feb gasoline -0.0667 (-4.08%). Feb crude oil and gasoline on Monday closed sharply lower with both contracts at 3-week lows. Crude oil prices were undercut by concern that increased U.S. crude oil output will offset the decline in OPEC crude production after Friday's data from Baker Hughes showed U.S. active oil rigs rose for the tenth consecutive week as they increased by 4 rigs to a 1-year high of 529 rigs.

3 Hot ETFs - 1/6

When I talk about a hot stock or hot ETF I don't mean the most active or the fastest moving I'm talking of the ones that have hit the most frequent new high according to the new high lists on Barchart.  Here are the ETFs for today.

VOX - Telecom Services ETF --   an exchange-traded share class of Vanguard Telecommunication Services Index Fund, which employs a passive management or indexing investment approach designed to track the performance of the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) US Investable Market Telecommunication Services Index, an index of stocks of large, medium, and small U.S. companies in the telecommunication services sector, as classified under the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS). This GICS sector is made up of companies that provide communications services primarily through a fixed-line, cellular, wireless, high bandwidth, and/or fiber-optic cable network. The fund attempts to replicate the target index by investing all, or substantially all, of its assets in the stocks that make up the index, holding each stock in approximately the same proportion as its weighting in the index. The fund also may sample its target index by holding stocks that, in the aggregate, are intended to approximate the index in terms of key characteristics, such as price/earnings ratio, earnings growth, and dividend yield. Typically, the fund will use a sampling strategy only if regulatory constraints or other considerations prevent it from replicating the index.

  • 17 new highs and up 5.37% in the last month
  • Relative Strength Index us 64.03% and rising

The Underlying Intellidex methodology is designed to objectively identify those stocks within a particular market segment that have the greatest potential for capital appreciation. The methodology evaluates companies quarterly, based on a variety of criteria, including fundamental growth, stock valuation, investment timeliness and risk factors, and then ranks and sorts them based on their cumulative scores. The Fund will normally invest at least 80% of its total assets in common stocks of large capitalization companies.

  • 17 new highs and up 4.37% in the last month
  • Relative Strength Index 70.97%
  • Trading around 18.80 which is well above its 50 day moving average of 18.12
JKF - Morningstar Large Value ETF -- The Fund seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the Morningstar Large Value Index (the "Underlying Index"). The Underlying Index measures the performance of stocks issued by large- capitalization companies that have exhibited above-average "value" characteristics as determined by Morningstar's proprietary index methodology. Underlying Index constituents are drawn from the pool of liquid stocks issued by U.S.-domiciled companies that trade publicly on the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE"), the NYSE Amex Equities or The NASDAQ Stock Market LLC.
