MARKET COMMENTS
June E-mini S&Ps (ESM16 +0.18%) this morning are up +3.25 points (+0.15%). Tuesday's closes: S&P 500 +0.13%, Dow Jones +0.10%, Nasdaq-0.23%. The S&P 500 on Tuesday rallied to a 10-1/2 month high and closed higher on carryover support from a rally in European stocks on positive European economic data after Eurozone Q1 GDP was revised upward and after German Apr industrial production rose more than expected. Stocks were also boosted by gains in energy-producers after crude oil prices climbed to an 8-month high.
September 10-year T-note prices (ZNU16 -0.04%) this morning are down -1.5 ticks. Tuesday's closes: TYU6 +2.50, FVU6 +2.00. Sep T-notes on Tuesday closed higher on positive carryover from a rally in German bunds as the 10-year bund yield fell to a record low 0.045%. T-notes also continued to receive support from the reduced prospects for a near-term Fed rate hike after Fed Chair Yellen on Monday refused to set any time line for when the Fed may raise rates again.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.18%) this morning is down -0.134 (-0.14%) at a 1-month low. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is up +0.0020 (+0.18%). USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.31 (-0.29%). Tuesday's closes: Dollar Index -0.074 (-0.08%), EUR/USD +0.0003 (+0.03%), USD/JPY -0.19 (-0.18%). The dollar index on Tuesday closed lower on continued bearishness after Fed Chair Yellen on Monday expressed concern about last Friday's payroll report and backed off her previous comment that a rate hike would be appropriate in "coming months." The dollar index was also undercut by strength in EUR/USD after Eurozone Q1 GDP was revised upward and after German Apr industrial production rose more than expected.
July WTI crude oil (CLN16 +1.23%) this morning is up +67 cents (+1.33%) at a 10-1/2 month high. July gasoline (RBN16 +1.18%) is up +0.0214 (+1.35%). Tuesday's closes: CLN6 +0.67 (+1.35%), RBN6 -0.0016 (-0.10%). July crude oil and gasoline on Tuesday settled mixed with July crude at an 8-month high. Crude oil prices were boosted by a weaker dollar and by continued support from Monday's news that Nigerian oil production has been slashed by 700,000-800,000 bpd by militant attacks on pipelines and installations. Crude oil prices were also boosted by expectations that Wednesday's weekly EIA report would show that U.S. crude oil inventories fell by -3.0 million bbls.

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU14 -0.26%) this morning are down -0.34% at a 2-month low and European stocks are down -1.41% at a 4-1/2 month low amid escalating tension in Ukraine. The Polish Foreign Ministry said the risk of Russia invading Ukraine has increased in the "last dozen hours or so" after Russian President Putin increased the number of troops on his country's western border. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan -1.05%, Hong Kong -0.26%, China -0.26%, Taiwan +0.03%, Australia -0.12%, Singapore -0.22%, South Korea -0.38%, India -0.94%. Commodity prices are mixed. German Jun factory orders unexpectedly fell -3.2% m/m, much weaker than expectations of +0.9% m/m and the largest monthly decline in 2-3/4 years. On an annual basis Jun factory orders fell -2.4%, weaker than expectations of +1.1% y/y.

MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU14 -0.26%) this morning are down -6.50 points (-0.34%) at a new 2-month low. The S&P 500 index on Tuesday slumped to a 2-month low and closed lower: S&P 500 -0.97%, Dow Jones -0.84%, Nasdaq -0.87%. Negative factors included (1) concern over escalation of the Ukraine crisis after Poland's Foreign Minister said Russia is amassing troops on the Ukraine border and are poised to invade Ukraine, and (2) Chinese economic concerns after the China HSBC Jul services PMI dropped -3.1 to 50.0, the lowest since the data series began in 2005. Stocks ignored bullish factors that included (1) the Jul ISM non-manufacturing index that rose +2.7 to an 8-1/2 year high of 58.7, and (2) the +1.1% increase in Jun factory orders, stronger than expectations of +0.6%.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU14 +0.20%) this morning are up +8.5 ticks at a 2-week high. Sep 10-year T-note futures prices on Tuesday erased early losses and closed little changed after a slide in stocks boosted safe-haven demand for T-notes. T-notes had been lower most of the day on concern the Fed may hike interest rates sooner-than-expected after Jun factory orders rose more than expected and after the Jul ISM non-manufacturing index expanded at its fastest pace in 8-1/2 years. Closes: TYU4 +0.50, FVU4 -1.25.
The dollar index (DXY00 +0.44%) this morning is up +0.350 (+0.43%) at a 10-3/4 month high. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0034 (-0.25%) at an 8-3/4 month low and USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.23 (-0.22%). The dollar index on Tuesday jumped to a 10-1/2 month high but fell back on profit taking and closed unchanged. The dollar had moved higher after the larger-than-expected increase in the Jul ISM non-manufacturing index to an 8-1/2 year high and the stronger than expected Jun factory orders added to evidence the U.S. economy is gathering steam. EUR/USD slipped to an 8-3/4 month low as expectations the Fed will tighten monetary policy before the ECB, which boosted the dollar's interest rate differentials against the euro. Closes: Dollar index unch, EUR/USD -0.00458 (-0.34%), USD/JPY +0.026 (+0.03%).
Sep WTI crude oil (CLU14 +0.37%) this morning is up +20 cents (+0.21%) and Sep gasoline (RBU14 +0.88%) is up +0.0192 (+0.71%). Sep crude and gasoline prices on Tuesday closed lower with Sep gasoline at a 6-month low: CLU4 -0.91 (-0.93%), RBU4 -0.0094 (-0.34%). Bearish factors included (1) the rally in the dollar index to a 10-1/2 month high, and (2) concern that the shutdown of the Coffeyville, Kansas, refinery last week will lead to an increase in inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma, the delivery point of WTI futures, when EIA weekly inventory data is released on Wednesday.

OVERNIGHT MARKETS AND NEWS
September E-mini S&Ps (ESU13 -0.37%) this morning are down -0.32% and European stocks are down -0.08%. Asian stocks closed mostly lower: Japan -4.00%, Hong Kong -1.53%, China -0.57%, Taiwan -1.46%, Australia -1.85%, Singapore +0.16%, South Korea -1.64%, India -0.36%. Global stocks retreated on speculation the Fed may be nearer to tapering stimulus after hawkish comments Tuesday from Chicago Fed President Evans who said he "would not rule out" a decision to begin cutting bond purchases as soon as September. GBP/USD erased early losses and climbed to a 5-week high as the British pound rallied after the BOE hiked its UK growth projections for this year and next. Commodity prices are mixed. Sep crude oil (CLU13 -0.08%) is up +0.05%, Sep gasoline (RBU13 -0.16%) is down -0.10%, Dec gold (GCZ13 -0.48%) is down -0.51% at a 3-week low on speculation the Fed will soon begin to trim stimulus, and Sep copper (HGU13 -0.96%) is down -0.69%. Agricultural prices are mixed. The dollar index (DXY00 -0.04%) is down -0.05%. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.06% and USD/JPY (^USDJPY) is down -0.45% at a 1-1/2 month low as the yen strengthens on speculation the BOJ probably won't expand stimulus measures at its 2-day meeting that ends tomorrow. September T-note prices (ZNU13 +0.05%) are up +2.5 ticks on weak stocks.
The BOE in its monthly inflation report raised its UK 2013 and 2014 GDP estimates to 1.5% and 2.7% from 1.2% and 1.9% forecast in May. The BOE also said it sees inflation cooling gradually and reaching its 2% target in Q4 of 2015. BOE Governor Carney for the first time linked the monetary policy outlook to unemployment when he said that "while the unemployment rate remains above 7%, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) stands ready to undertake further asset purchases if further stimulus is warranted. But until the unemployment threshold is reached the MPC intends not to reduce the stock of asset purchases from the current 375 billion pounds."
The UK July Lloyds employment confidence climbed to -22 from -33 in June, its highest level in 5-3.4 years.
German Jun industrial production rose +2.4% m/m and +2.0% y/y, much stronger than expectations of +0.3% m/m and -0.3% y/y, with the +2.4% m/m increases the biggest monthly gain in 23-months.

MARKET COMMENTS
Sep E-mini S&Ps (ESU13 -0.37%) this morning are down -5.50 points (-0.32%). The S&P 500 index on Tuesday closed lower, led by a decline in retailers, after a Janney Montgomery analyst downgraded the retail softline sector to “underweight” from “neutral.” Stocks failed to garner much support from the smaller-than-expected U.S. Jun trade deficit of -$34.2 billion, the lowest in 3-1/2 years, which should lead to an upward revision of Q2 GDP. Closes: S&P 500 -0.57%, Dow Jones -0.60%, Nasdaq 100 -0.67%.
Sep 10-year T-notes (ZNU13 +0.05%) this morning are up +2.5 ticks. Closes: TYU3 +0.50, FVU3 +0.25.
The dollar index (DXY00 -0.04%) this morning is down -0.042 (-0.05%). EUR/USD (^EURUSD) is down -0.0008 (-0.06%) and USD/JPY

Sep WTI crude oil (CLU13 -0.08%) this morning is up +5 cents a barrel (+0.05%) and Sep gasoline (RBU13 -0.16%) is down -0.0029 (-0.10%). Sep crude oil and gasoline prices on Tuesday closed lower. Crude prices fell as stocks weakened and after the EIA in its Short-Term Energy Outlook raised its U.S. crude production forecast to 7.4 million barrels a day in 2013 and 8.2 million in 2014, 100,000 barrels a day higher than last month’s forecast. Gasoline prices tumbled to a 4-week low after the value for 2013 Renewable Identification Numbers, or RINS, slumped to a 2-month low. Refiners must buy the RINs in lieu of blending ethanol into gasoline to meet federal requirements for biofuel use. Closes: CLU3 -1.26 (-1.18%), RBU3 -0.0355 (-1.20%).
